* Saturday I "won" a game of "What am I allergic to now?"

Spoiler: sandalwood. It was sandalwood. Sigh.

* Thursday was likely the last of the good fruit from the market garden down the street as I can't afford more. They were plums. The oval ones with the dark purple skin and the yellowish interior, perfectly rich of flavour and sweet. I already miss them. Sunday I ate one of the tomatoes that hadn't developed right from the garden and it was like the whole flavour of what would have been a full sized heirloom was compressed into something a tad larger than a cherry tomato. It was still warm from the sun. I dislike summer, but I do love the fresh fruit and veg it brings.

Last Wednesday we started Gothmas prep stuff. The Gothmas season stretches from when the first leaves start turning until some time first week of January. It has many phases. I didn't used to count prep as a phase, but it really is. Last Wednesday was basically Adult Arts and Crafts and cleaning air-conditioner vents. Sunday was things like break down and drain the living room air condition. admittedly a risk with this humidity, but we can't move forward without putting it away. We are hoping to start interior decorating Wednesday.

As always, the goal is to have everything up but the exterior by the end of the 27th. Let's hope i remember to start the curtains in the washing machine before I leave for Wednesday errands. (I really shouldn't be taking the curtains down myself, but I can't put them back up myself, so the timing needs to be a thing that happens when I'm dressed for the day, but with enough time for wash and dry while the Millennials are here.

I am so ready for Autumn, which should be much farther along, but the wind patterns have been radically fucked for half a decade thanks to climate crisis.

The cleaner tricked poor Livia Friday into thinking he was Goth Millennial. He was very quiet and making familiar doing things in the kitchen sounds, so without checking his identity she trundled out of her hide so she could watch birds from her padded podium by my bedroom window. About and hour and a quarter later, he loomed into her doorway. Panic! Goth Millennial was a doppelganger! a Tricksey shape Shifting stranger!

Saturday, she hid from Goth Millennial in case they performed the same shape shifting trick again. Fool me once….

Sunday she was on my bed with Tavy when I brought Goth Millennial in, and we were mid-chat, so she decided Goth Millennial was not a Decepticon because that meant she could keep enjoying the pet I was giving her and a nap in her Spot instead of repairing to her Fortress of Solitude for the evening. it was fine. no shape shifting shenanigans ensued.

I promised a friend an age ago that I’d write about my personal queer stuff, as they didn’t know me when I was writing more about it, but then I got deluged by the news fire hose and a series of exhausting RL emergencies amoung myself and my local friends. I meant to write maybe a small essay a week this Pride month, but I didn’t get there because *gestures out the window at everything physically and metaphorically on fire*

Still, I do want to write something, especially as, if you are reading this on tumblr, about half of you have started following me in the last year and a half. so here is the answer to the first question, at least, with a promise of more to follow at some point.

Remember, we are all different and people with wildly different experiences are absolutely valid. sometimes these things can be difficult and complicated to untangle. A shout out in particular to late in lifers and all the folks who are still on the journey to self discovery. You are loved and real. Don't let anyone try to tell you otherwise, because those people are what we call assholes.

* Livia is trying more new things! Once when she was young and had a very bad cold, she slept on me for hours, but she never did again. Until today. She spent all day on top of me and when I finally came out of my room, squeaked at me extensively and tried to get me to go back in. She has discovered she likes sleeping on me after all. It may possibly be the best thing ever.

This evening, Livia just discovered that if she sits on the pettin throne the human will pet her, and it's way more comfortable than squeezing herself into the Tavy sized spot next to Klaus. Bonus? No competition from Tavy.

I bought that padded stool for Mache when she was getting old. It's the perfect height for an arthritic kitty to pull herself up on, and is pleasingly round and padded for old bones. LM discovered it in her declining years and made good use of it. Now Livia is the third girl to discover it's comforts and the bonus pettins that come with.

* It snowed for a long time Tuesday. There is no safe path from my door to my car and I can't risk another bad fall on ice, since the last time was the beginning of the end for my mobility. I literally never recovered properly. Yes, i know I used to run in snow like this as a sport, but I'm annoyingly breakable now.

Ideally, I'd go and by stop gap goosh at the good pet supply store a few blocks away, but barring a lot of melting? That isn't happening. I keep emergency human grade meat for emergencies like this, but it's not the right kind. Still, one ingredient wet food s better than no wet food and the hope is that the prescription kibbles will be enough to patch the gap. Money cleared by evening Tuesday, so I have an order in for flats of the right goosh and the new kibble. I'll need to watch her like a hawk for recurrence when I switch the kibble, and there's no guarantee all three will like it once it's every day instead of an exciting new sample, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

* Wednesday Update: Squirrel tried to go out in the morning to get meds. He barely made it to the nearby grocery store and back without killing himself. he decided trying to get to his pharmacy would be suidice so he came home. He went too early to get emergency girl cat food; she is turning her nose up at the people food offering. On arriving home, he declared: you are not going out today." He was right. There is no visible sign of melting nor a path to the driveway. I gave him most of my OTC cough stuff, since I mostly use the prescription stuff these days. he is off to work. Luckily there is not a lot he can crash into on the way there. I'm still worried about his safety and that of his car.

I got an email today with homework from the renovators. It is possible we start next week, which means I need to move bedroom furniture and clear the mantel, brek down that tank, and clear the environs before then.

I also need to figure out what the fuck we are replacing a bunch of things with. I have no clear idea how the picking thing part works. I suspect I'm about to browse the home depot website with the specs, but no way is that happening tonight. I did send him back an email okaying stuff and answering all the easy questions (Yes, those look like HOA approved handles. Yes, please get those fans. Yes, do the water heater exchange and electric fire removal while I work on the other stuff.

This is a huge opportunity for us. It is amazing that this program exists and I'm am looking forward to having everything not broken anymore. At the same time this is a massive spoon investment for me and I'm still very much not well even by my standards, even though I am noticeably improved since last weekend. I am worried my friend won't be able to come help and Squirrel and I will have to do the furniture moving alone. The bedroom stuff is heavy and very much designed not to be moved again ever. I've worked out a way we can tetris an extra foot of clearance or two, but it's dicey and I've emailed asking exactly how much space I need to. I may need to sacrifice drawer access for the duration, and if so I need to make new homes for bunch of my clothes.

So we ain'tn't dead, but I really, really need to start breaking down that tank and do all this research in the face of still sick sluggishness.

* I ended up in tears just trying to deal with the tub stuff. I can't even figure out how to get search terms that will give me seperate hot and cold water control knobs and a spout, let alone how to pick ones that are sturdy and will work with our plumbing. I have figured out that the kind of tub I actually need is twice our budget and that changing the colour of shower heads for some reason at the minimum doubles their price for literally the same item. The websites give length of tub, but i can;t figure out how to find width or depth.

I haven't a clue where one buys microwave/hoods to the listed specs let a lone how to actually pick one that will last. I love the specs for the replacement washer and dryer. I have no idea how to get the internet to show me those or how to tell which models are good.

I aparently haven't the toilet related vocabulary to even guess search terms for the right kind of toilet seat and again, I can stare at pctures of toilets all night, but I can't begin to guess how to tell which one fits specs, is sturdy, and comfortable for y knees and butt.

I think I might not be even close to bright enough to do this and that even for free this project is just way to hard for me.

I really, really don't think I can do this.

* Even with the extra pain management the insomnia was bad today, and I'm suspecting something is wrong underneath the pain now I've stripped enough down to do a better assessment. IDK.

Today was my first time leaving the apartment in a week. It was body temperature out there and warmer in the sun, though the big drifts and the remains of the snowman haven't melted yet. It was so warm, I opened the window for the first time in months and the Imperial couple sat in it together peaceably for hours enjoying the fresh air and sunlight. Squirrel had put gas in the car, which is good since when I got to the Dollar store there was no Mr. Plumber, so a one dollar trip to unclog the kitchen sink enough to do dishes turned into a nearly $10 dollar purchase at the expensive grocery once tax was added in. I have no idea when Squirrel is getting his car fixed, so we're sharing until then. The books went back to the time traveling drop, and I made it home before the shakes set in, which is good from a safety perspective. Just that little trip to the shopping center a couple blocks away in the car exhausted me completely and the pain started rising hard and fast when I was in the second store. Sink's unclogged at least.

Tomorrow I really must forage. Tuesday is the eye doctor, which is whole saga by itself. I am seriously concerned I won't be up to either.

They tasted good, but not rum bally. Also, I still haven't solved the cholesterol friendly cupcakes crumble problem, though I have an idea I'll try next time.

I also managed to burn my arm. Again. This time because I couldn't get a proper grip on the second pan with the oven mitts. My hand slipped and my arm hit the oven. Sigh.

They seem to misunderstand the effects of the Great Pestilence, as it wasn't a short event. Rather it came in waves for a few centuries. The population low point was around 12400. This makes me question whether they are are failing to realize that the effects of the Great pestilence and the Mongol Invasions are overlapping events in time. It's still interesting, but I have serious questions about their conclusions. Seriously, three centuries plus of Great Pestilance is not shorter than the hundred years or so they are calling long term in the study.

* On a related note, something it's easy for modern western folk to overlook is how deadly medieval cities were. In England, the average survival time for an urban family was three generations. Wave after wave of air, vermin, and water born disease, food contamination, fire, and violence would hit a family so that they would simply die out. Cities depended on constant influx from the country side to keep their numbers up, all those younger sons and daughters come seeking their fortunes. The well off got around the mortality rate by fleeing to country homes in the seasons most prone to epidemic and fleeing in front of disease and rumors of disease, often carrying pathogens with them to the villages. The poor stayed behind to live or die. Most often, they died. That's the reality: that most of your children would die, and that half of the people coming to the city would never have great grand children.

* The neighbor lady woke me up mid sleep cycle to use my phone. I gave her a bag of off brand granola bars. As food is meant to be coming tomorrow. She's been better groomed and easier to understand the last few times she's come. She says she is moving to a better neighborhood in a week.
