* Rick Perry is out of the primary race and enforcing Newt Gingrich. Remember what I said about most of the weaker candidates dropping out before February?
* Mitt Romney turns out to have huge amounts of money stashed in the Caiman Islands. He claims it isn't to avoid taxes, even though that's the only reason to stash money there.
* Newt Gingrich made 3 million dollars last year in income. It's like RichieRich calling Tony Stark rich....
* It turns out santorum won Iowa, not Romney.
* John Stewart's superPAC just released an attack add on Stephen Colbert and the supac supporting him (itself) with Samuel L. Jackson paraphrasing his snakes on a plane dialog.
* Someone has been paying an aweful lot of money for pro-SOPA ads in my area in response to the success of the protests. It is too early to declare victory.
* Re Gingrich's open marriage. For me this is a hypocrisy issue. He was trying to force his sick wife to sign off on him having a mistress while impeaching the president over a blow job. Clearly, Bill Clinton was always seeing women on the side. His wife was clearly aware of this. We knew this when we elected him. I have no idea what private arrangements the Clintons made between themselves, and it's none of our business, especially since it's clear by her continuing all these decades that whatever the agreement is works for her. Gingrich, on the other hand told a women just diagnosed with ms that he was leaving if she didn't sign off on him fucking whoever, which seems slimy and coercive, but is only our business because he was attacking Bill Clinton for doing the same thing only without the coercion and cruelty.
Still, I don't see how Newt Gingrich being a hypocritical and heartless asshole to his wives is news. I mean, we knew he was this sort of douche for ages.
For the record, ethical polyamoury involves negotiating the terms of nonmonogamy first, not demanding permission to do it openly after a few years of secret cheating. zhe is making the rest of us who are ethical look like assholes.
* Re Rum Balls: I don't currently own any rum or better yet whiskey. (I will actually drink whiskey, so it would be a more multi-purpose sort of alcohol). I'm also short on perishables, and can't replace them until the snow melts, nor can I purchase ingredients not currently in my kitchen.
Instead, I opted to make chocolate cupcakes with brandy and rum extract in the hopes of getting something like the taste, though obviously not the texture. It didn't work, alas. They tasted good, but not rum bally. Also, I still haven't solved the cholesterol friendly cupcakes crumble problem, though I have an idea I'll try next time.
I also managed to burn my arm. Again. This time because I couldn't get a proper grip on the second pan with the oven mitts. My hand slipped and my arm hit the oven. Sigh.
* rm has found a nifty charity to help fund gender affirming surgeries for trans folk. Generally, insurance doesn't cover this stuff and thanks to employment discrimination, it can be incredibly challenging to raise funds. http://keenquing.tumblr.com/post/15997108381/want-to-help-fund-gender-affirming-surgeries

Cupcakes themselves (frosting recipe is after this):
Ingredients:
2/3 cup vegan semisweet chocolate chips
1/4 cup of soy yogurt (I used raspberry, but any would be fine)
1/2 cup cherry preserves
1/2 cup of soy milk
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup canola oil
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
2 tablespoons of whiskey
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/4 cup Dutch-processed cocoa powder
1 teaspoon of baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon of salt
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease cupcake pan (or use cupcake liners).
2. Melt the chocolate either in a double-boiler (if you have one), in the microwave, or in a small pan on the stove on very low heat.
3. Mix together the yogurt, preserves, soy milk, sugar, oil, vanilla, almond extract, and whiskey in a large bowl. The preserves should be mixed in very well and there should be no large clumps.
4. Sift in the flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix thoroughly. If using an electric mixer, mix for about 3 minutes. Add in melted chocolate.
5. Fill in the liners/cupcake tin full with batter. Bake for 24-26 minutes. The tops may look shiny, soft, and undone, but that is ok, they should look that way.
Frosting:
Ingredients:
2 tablespoons melted dairy-free margarine
1/4 cup Dutch-processed cocoa powder
3 tablespoons soy milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
Directions:
Beat together margarine, cocoa, soy milk, and vanilla. Add the sugar in cupfuls until incorporated.
....These are super tasty!!! You can also make them in a brownie pan and eat it as a cake instead of cupcakes (this is what I did.) :)
