You are flat out wrong. The FBI does background checks for judicial nominees all the time. It is literally part of their job. On previous occasions, like the Tower and Thomas confirmation hearings, where more information emerged after the initial hearings, new more focused background investigation was ordered from the FBI to investigate the allegations, after which the hearings were reopened.

This is the normal procedure in cases like this. Either the President or the Congress can order the FBI to do more background checks. The judiciary committee could also hire an independent non-partisan investigator. Republicans are refusing to do allow of those things even though that is the normal precedent.

Every time you hear a Republican politician claim FBI doesn’t do background checks, they are lying. Chuck Grassley was on the Judiciary Committee during the Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas Hearings in which the FBI did exactly the sort of background check we are asking for. He is lying and he knows he is lying every time he says the FBI doesn’t do background checks.

UPDATE: Flake and Murkowski have joined the Democrats in wanting an FBI Background check, and the FBI now has a week to investigate the allegations.

Which is AGAIN literally part of their job.

* Re: Kavanaugh's calendars. Admittedly, I'm a bit younger, so high School was '84-'86, but the tech was the same. Excluding things like school dances of which I attended a total of three including less than an hour at Senior Prom, my calendars didn't show any of the parties I went to. Anyway, my point is, as someone who was a teen in the time period before the World Wide Web and when cell phones were huge, just phones, and only for rich assholes, I find it way more likely that any drunken parties he was going to were word of mouth than otherwise. Just saying. like I never once saw one of my friends or one of the very Kavanaugh like assholes at my school whip out a physical calendar and write down when and where they planned to get drunk that weekend.

* Livia's no good very bad day: It started out fine. The Imperial couple realized I was bathing before bed and sensibly retired to my room for pre-Bedtime naps. I found them there: her cradled on the body pillow up near the head of the bed, him making a comfortable donut at the foot, just waiting for me to come to make him a leg mest for the real bedtime. They were so comfortable that thee was no milling about when I got into bed. Everyone had their back stroked and when back to dozing while i did things like reconfigure pillows and take the just beore sleep meds. I read a couple of chapter of Ms. McGuire, then I turned off the light. Tavy climbed on to my legs in expectation of hours of stillness. Livia pressed very gently against me. Peaceable Kingdom achieved. Minutes later? The phone.

It was the management company wanting to do an emergency fire inspection. This is no surprise. Last Spring the alarms all started going off when Squirrel showered if he forgot to turn on all the fans. I called, but nothing came of it and I did not want to press too hard as they might charge us for it instead of fixing it. We changed all the batteries and it happens less often, and it's yet another inconvenience we've had to learn to live with. Last Thursday it went off because I made pasta, even though the hood fan was on, which means the one right in front of my room with the brand new battery is now doing it too, in response to ordinary amounts of steam. Apparently every time the alarm goes off here to punish us for showering and cooking, it triggers something at the management company office. It's been getting way worse, so i bet it's happening all over my floor, the detector system all being the same age. Apparently the flashy lights went off so often this past week, they've decided to stop ignoring it.

So emergency fire inspection today, with a minimum one hour warning, but more likely in the afternoon. Somehow, the cats did not scatter despite the phone, and were still there when I was done warning Squirrel he had to clean his room for inspection Right Now. They did scatter in terror when he jiggled his dector to make sure it was properly seated after the last time he had to pull it when itwouldn't stop screaming about him taking a shower. Good bye peacable kigdom, hello hiding closet for cats. They called with a two hour afternoon window, which I went to inform Squirrel of. I cleaned the mess on the kitchen floor made by him taking out the garbage the night before. (This is fine and not a complaint. He does the carrying and lifting because I can't without seriously endangering myself. I clean because I'm the one notices what needs cleaning and knows how best to do it. I'm also the one with the list of cleaning supplies in my head and who knows what we have and what we need to buy next month. This division of labor is agreed on and very, very logical, being based on who is good at what. So again, not a complaint). I go back to bed and set the alarm so I will for sure be wearing trousers as they are like to hit us very early in the inspection window. I do get some crappy, interrupted sleep, and the beasts do eventually come back to the bed.

I get the clothes on and am lying there in the dusk of my room on an Autumn afternoon trying to decide if I should read or try to nap when they come. The Imperial Couple hides in the closet from the Strangers. Tavy will stay on the bed if the voices are familiar, but these were not voices he recognized, so from the perspective of the Cats, we were being Invaded by Cat Eating Trolls, some of them in Kitty Stomping Work Boots. *shudder*

I told them the saga of the smoke detectors. They decided they battery units need replacing, but the flashy light thing is probably fine, since it was getting triggered by the assholish detectors. They say they'll get back to me, likely with better warning. I went back to bed, talking in the comfort voice, so the cats would know it's over. Tavy came right out and got his pettin and went back to sleep in the leg mest. It took Livia several chapters to venture out for her pettin and her nap on the body pillow.

I missed forage of course, having opted for several hours of crappy sleep over getting dressed right then and going out. I had meant to go get meds, but I couldn't bear to disturb the beasts so soon. I did end up going for the library loop and to see if that case I ordered beginning of the month was ready to be picked up. It was not. Sigh.

I am worn thin like a tiny bit of butter on too much bread. The cats have mostly recovered from sirens and strangers, though there has been a degree of understandable extra cling. LM has been roaming the house between naps, cursing at kittens these days and soaking up short pettins. I suspect I will be low energy, but I will make an effort to address the latest firehouse of horror spewing out of D.C.

He keeps claiming that the use of evidence and corroborating witnesses is unfair to the accused and insisting that impartial investigation by the FBI or an outside investigator is unnecessary. Why would he do that if he thought there was any chance of exonerating facts?

You know how I can tell most Republican politicians and pundits think he's guilty? Most of them jumped right to attempting to rape someone as a teen says nothing about his character and should be discounted, instead of claiming innocence.

You know how I can tell Kavanaigh clearly remembers doing it and knows that trying to rape people ought to be disqualifying, even though he doesn't think perjury or theft are crimes? He now has a friend out claiming Dr. Blasey Ford confused Kavanaugh for one of her then and still friends who is now a teacher as if she wouldn't know who tried to rape her, as if she'd have stayed friends with him after. It's an acknowledgement that she was assaulted and no one sensible would believe the mistaken identity nonsense.

I believed her any way from day one, of course. I'm just pointing out that the people refusing to follow normal Senate procedures so as to cover up the crime preety clearly know that they are covering up a crime.

* Please, please, please if you can manage it, contact your Senators to get them to fight the Kavanaugh nomination. This is geometrically more important if you have a centrist Democrat like Joseph Manchin, Joe Donnelly, Doug Jones, Jon Tester, and Heidi Heitkamp; or Republicans like Tim Scott, Marco Rubio, Susan Collins or Lisa Murkowski. It wouldn't hurt to demand your Republican Senators call for a proper FBI Background investigation. They won't, but pressuring them shows them there might be consequences.

* Today I really needed to finish the excellent Livia biography, so that's what I did all evening. When I did come out, I discovered a kind gift in my paypal. The ebay auction advert has been adjusted accordingly.

LM has been spending a huge amount of time with the door open and is now allowing Tavy within three feet of her nd Livia within about two. This suggests she's learned to tell them apart even with her poor eye sight. Monday night she not only ate 2/3 of a cat of tuna, but she shwed Liva away from the Junor Kitty plate to steal their meat juice. I also watched her scare Tavy off twice when he was clearly up to no good. She came for two longer pettins, has been wandering around the whole apartment when she's awake, and just generally seems more the way I remember her personality wise than the way she's been the last few years. I am calling this huge progress Livia the cat (As opposed to the historical figure) did figure out the person with the extra weird limp was also me at some point last night, so that was okay.

* I hate everything about the last several Elementary episodes.

* Something that is so often unsatisfying in media is the portrayal of scientists and skeptics. A friend once put his finger right on it. They aren't doing skepticism right. They are treating science like a strict religious dogma, when it's actually the opposite. Yes, one looks for logical explanations, but one doesn't reject facts because they don't fit a hypothesis, rather one changes the hypothesis.

I think about this often when I'm watching media or reading things with scientist or skeptical characters. Mira grant does a wonderful array of interesting and realistic characters, for example. A thing i read last week that annoyed me to no end did it exactly wrong: making the skeptic character rigid to the point of disconnecting from the reality around him entirely. his explanations for things were bad logic, so he was a straw skeptic. Ugh. It was a problem with the old X-Files. (I haven't seen the new ones; the transphobia in that movie made me too angry). I was rewatching the Night gallery, which I adored as a child and rewatch now and then. (It was incredibly pleasing to discover on the rewatch before this that Guillermo Del Toro loved them almost exactly the way I did, seeing the cheesey day or night photography and sub standard effects for what they were, but loving the stories all the same for the things that did work about them).

Anyway, over the weekend I saw the one where the witch is trying to steal the body of the Mathematician's wife, and they did the skepticism right. They established the Mathematician's logical nature and rejection of superstition in the first couple short scenes, but when presented with gradually building evidence that this particular supernatural thing was happening for real, he adjusted his views and took the peril as a serious one, used what lore he could gather and did his best to save his wife. The werewolf one is like that too. The psychiatrist assumes it's all delusion at first, but when presented with enough evidence, adjusts his world view and does his best.

When they do it right, it's so much more satisfying. (As is often the case in life in general). Every time I use my late friend's measuring stick to see if a character design lives up to the standard, I think of him.

* Today I was super short sleeped as I had an afternoon guest. I made tea and we chattered and did a bit of Gothmas prep. After we went and looked at the Target display for fun, as they had put out the housewares since Monday. It was rather disappointing, to be honest. They usually have way more cool things. They did have some lights and filigree black pumpkins adored and would have bought if I were rich. (Look, as a poor person, I must take my pleasures where I can get them and looking at black skulls with purple bejeweling and pressing buttons on sample electronics is fun). Then I dropped them off at work.

Thanks to strong though sporadic rain I was able to solve the allergen vs. pathogen quandary in favour of allergens, as I woke up dramatically improved. no way could my sluggish immune system shrug of anything respiratory that fast. I'm not up to as good as it gets for me, but this is a level of for reasonable that noticeably improves with each passing hours. Rain tamps down allergens as I'm basically allergic to outside, but not inside things like mold, dust or cats.

I got my flu shot on the way home as a result. I think this may be one of the better ones, though odds are I'll be running a sporadic low grade fever soon enough. The vaccine is very, very worth it. I trade a sporadic low grade fever for a couple days to a week, plus maybe a wee bit of injection site itching depending on the shot make up for two weeks to a month of influenza which for someone with my set of genetic horrors is potentially dangerous. The partial immunity for similar strains in Spring is also very worth it. There is a reason my medical team is emphatic about me getting them and why I try to get them a early as I can each year.

Vaccinate yourself and your kids if you don't have medical contraindications such as allergiies to the injection or an illness precluding. It is safe and it HELPS.

Tavy let my friend pet hi again, a sign that they really do now count as adjunct clowder members in Tavy's mind. Today I wore one of the trousers I pulled out of storage. They fit as well as they did before I went on the medication that I went off to cause the subtle weight loss. This is actually better than expected. It looks like I need to do a repair to one of the chains, but other wise everything is good. Unfortunately, Livia is scared of the,. No really. The chains jingle softly when I walk. It is nowhere near as loud as the keys, but of a similar type. I am practicing walking softly and we'll see how that goes. She hid from the guest as usual, but I came home from dropping them off and knew she had been napping on the bed from the loud thump of her landing and a glimpse of her moving in the shadows. Tavy was still on the bed and being smaller, it's a lighter thump. She kept coming out when I wass doing plants/tank/food/lung, but whenever I started walking, she ran back to my room. The hope is she'll come out now I'm more still and I've worked out a way to minimize jingle. I don't plan to wear these trousers every day anyway, but only when I go out. The patched together silent ones, I'll use on days I stay home.

Update: Livia came out again while I was typing this entry. We'll see how she does.

Update 2: Even after I changed my trousers, Livia avoided me for hours. She eventually came around, luckily and is fine.

LM's been out and about since noon. This is not just the most social I've seen her since her cohort died, but this is the most physically active she's been since her brother and Mache went. Pretty good for a cranky old lady, I think. She even's been nibbling at the kibbles on her forays into the apartment proper, and tried one of the junior beasties crunchy treats, despite her having perfered to starve rather than eat kibbles anymore over a year ago, hence Squirrel switching her to an all goosh diet despite her still having her teeth. She still hisses at the junior beasties when they come to close, but I think she's finally accepted that the others are gone for real and these are the cats she has to hang out with. I am terribly proud of her. She came and got pettins on Mache's old pettin throne thrice! (The pettin throne is a footstool I found at a second hand store that is padded on top and was the exact right height for Mache to get on and off of herself easily even with her arthritis. It was perfect for her to nap on next to my desk, and whenever she woke, she'd get pettins on demand. The junior kitties mostly use it as a stepping stone for jumping on the desk, though both have used it now and then for things like short pettins or in Tavy's case, attempting to eat the arm of my chair.) Anyway, I have hopes that however many years LM has left will be better than the last few have been.

- 7.1: Descent. We pick up with Picard, Geordi, and Deanna surrounded by Borg being lead by Lore and Date. Lore monologues about how he found Hugh's ship after the Enterprise rendered them individuals and "gave them a purpose," I.E: Serving Lore. I do like that he's not wrong about abandoning the new individuals to flail about was not okay, but that doesn't make Lore any better for having manipulated them into becoming his genocidal army. Meanwhile Dr. Crusher is commanding the Enterprise and Riker and Worf are searching the planet for Picard. The Borg ship comes back. They try to grab away teams before leaving, but they don't have time to get back 47, including Riker and Worf. Of course. Meanwhile they try to talk Data down, but all he feels is hatred and anger and he reasons back at them. He takes Geordi's visor. The Borg don't follow the ship; Riker orders the ones left on the planet to hide. Crusher and the B Team crewfolk come up with a risky plan to try to buy enough time to rescue the rest. Lore plans to experiment on humans. one of the Borg doesn't want to stay linked and prefers to think for himself, but Lore talks him out of it. Geordi could see a carrier wave comming from Lore before they took his visor and he thinks that's how he's manipulating Data. They decide to generate a pulse in hopes of reactivating Data's ethical sub-routine, but Data takes Geordi before they work out the details. Riker and Worf are taken to a cave of rebel rebel Borg who are Pissed. Hugh calls the Feds out on abandoning them to be used by Lore. He's not wrong. Anyway, when Lore started experimenting horribly on Borg to try to make them wholly artificial, that's when Hugh and the others fled. He asks after Geordi and on discovering he's being held by Lore, agrees to help with a rescue. meanwhile, Data is planning to replace Geordi's brain cells with an experimental neural net, a process that will likely kill him. Deanna and Picard try the old "he's sick" trick, which fools the guard, but Data turn's up with injured Geordi. Picard palmed a thingie from the guard they took down and Picard tries to make the pulse thingie with Geordi talking him through it. They beam as many up as they can in the time they have, but six are missing still. Crusher sets course towards the sun. They try an experimental shield Geordi designed. Geordi tries to get Data to be more Data by talking about shared memories. He gets data to delay killing all his brain cells by pointing out how data will likely see his actions if he ever is himself again. Data pretends he's not doing it for sciencey reasons. Lore victims blames; Data realizes if the humans die he will be responsible so looks like the pulse thingie works. Lore punishes Data by manipulating his emotions. The just out of the academy B Team crew woman saves the ship. Picard makes ethical arguments at Data to try to save Geordi. Lore orders Data to kill Picard; Data refuses. Lore monologues about he is making a sacrifice by killing Data. Hugh risks himself to save him and a Borg brawl breaks out with Riker and Worf sniping. Lore pretends he's going to give Data and emotion/Memory chip, but data sees through him, shooting nd deactivating him. Lore says he loves data just before he's deactivated. Hugh becomes the rebel Borg leader. Data's emotion chip was damaged. He says he is relieved as he doesn't want to risk hurting Geordi again. Geordi reaffirms their friendship, but also says "Someday when you're ready." This one had a lot of good ethical meat in it about unintended consequences. It was good to see Geordi's importance was repeatedly emphasized here. he's so often under utilized

- 7.2 Liaisons. Worf is procrastinating while insisting Klingons don't procrastinate, because he doesn't like diplomating. Riker teases him a bit. Apparently they are having a cultural exchange. Picard is going back with them while some exchange officers are paired up with enterprise crew. Riker's guy wants Worf instead so Worf is stuck with him. Deanna corrupts hers with Chocolate; Worf's is an asshole who orders him about. Data tells Worf to "build on your similarities." Ouch. Meanwhile Picard is on a really long trip with a man who doesn't small talk, but there is an emergency forcing them to land on a random planet. Picard's guy is injured and there is too much interference to get help from enterprise. Picard goes out to see if there is help at a nearby structure and gets electrocuted and dragged off. Back on the enterprise Worf is still being insulted. Deanna's diplomat is not completely obsessed with sweets, he's also fascinated by the existence of children since they wake from the pod fully grown. They take the child for dessert, Deanna's patience wearing thin. Picard wakes in a shelter with a mystery woman who says the pilot's dead. Mystery lady feeds him. She says she was a passenger on the ship they are sheltering in. She' been here seven years in turns out to her horror. Three of his ribs are broken. Her speech is halting from the years of not using her voice. He gets her to get stuff from the other ship. Worf is struggling not to kill asshole diplomat. Deanna admits the pleasure loving diplomat is getting a bit too much for her. Riker suggests poker, because of course he does. Picard discovers he's locked in; she claims it's to protect him from wild animals. He has only her word for what's really happening and it looks like the equipment's been phasored. He has only her word for anything. She is already claiming she loves him. Picard keeps working on his escpe and tries to explain to her she doesn't really love him. She is not best pleased to be rebuffed. The Ambassador steals Worf's chips during poker. They end up yelling and then fighting physically. Riker restrains Worf; the Ambassador thanks Worf and goes off to document the experience. Anna tries to stop Picard going back to the ship. he takes off the restricter and the ribs turn out not to be broken after all. He calls her on a whole list of lies. She sexually assaults him while demanding "Love me!" She sys she failed and leaves, locking him in. he hears the pilot calling and calls to him for help. The ilot claims to have been in a deathlike state and to have come looking for Picard when he woke. He claims he saw "Anna running" for the precipice. We only have his word for any of this. They split up to look for her at which point Picard conveniently finds her on the ledge, necklace that was broken fixed. She says she'll kill herself if Picard doesn't love her; Picard calls bullshit and she transforms back into the pilot. Apparently the first they knew of humans was Anna's logs in the crashed freighter. The pilot is the real Ambassador. The real Anna found the survivor of another crash and nursed him back to health, falling in love. They wanted to experience human emotions. Deanna's was to experience pleasure; Worf's was for anger and antagonism; Picard's was for love. They set up the conditions under which love had occurred previously. Picard explains that what the Ambassador has done is considered a crime in Picard's culture. Worf and his guy spent eleven hours sparring on the holodeck. Picard forgives the Ambassador.

* Wednesday was extra special. Just before bed, I discovered something had gone terribly tragically wrong in my tumblr image queue at the start of September, which admittedly explained why that's been such a pain lately. I had one of my radicalinsomnia bouts that ate most of my scheduled sleep. I'd finally drifted off under Tavy with an expectation of a two hour nap when the phone rang. I lifted it to find the last half of an automated message about buttons to bush to navigate the phone menu of some mystery organization I assume was in the first half? IDK. Rolled over. Tavy was making biscuits on my butt in anticipation of resettling. Phone rang scaring him off. at least this was a real call from my pharmacy asking questions about meds, which I answered, then told them I'd likely be in in the afternoon, but if not Friday. Changed the alarm to grant me two hours of sleep again. I did manage two hours of low quality sleep before it was time to wrestle myself into clothes and out of bed, which took two hours.

I was watering the plants before leaving when I damaged a leg. Not any leg mind you: the Better Leg. Most of the time a leg goes wrong it's the other one, see, and on a bad day, they both go bad together. I managed to sprain the better leg, which means everything that followed i basically had to do backward of how I usually manage one crutched. That means crutch on the wrong side where my armpit isn't used to taking the weight. That means messenger bag on the wrong hip. That means carrying things with the wrong arm, which hasn't got years of practice of curling burdens up one armed to carry on my head. That means the weight and balance and rhythm of my gait is clumsy and extra painful with the added worry that the other leg will not be able to handle carrying the extra work. I've been disabled a long time. I'm really good at working with the crutch under one arm for safety and support. I am efficient and have a certain amount of grace with it when my legs are working reasonably well. I do not have that with everything switched because i haven't over a decade of practice with it. Two crutches fine. Usual side fine. This? Novice. Plus of course the pain of the sprain and the pain of the on going accute thing I've been dealing with a week or more, plus the regular pain, plus the pain of the wrong armpit taking so much weight, plus the pain of using muscles in ways they aren't used to, plus I wasn't breathing so well. I had to go, you see. We needed milk, potatoes, lettuce, etc., and anyway, I'd invested two hours in getting upright, and I'd lost what little chance at sleep I'd had.

So I went. I looked so alarmingly bad a tiny Ukrainian Grandmother with obvious osteoporosis tried to get me to let her carry my forage gear. <.< >.> Me: I usually just scoot it along the floor. her and the nice central American lady ahead of me: *skeptical look* The nice thing about a cart is it takes a lot more late and hurts less, though I still had the rhythm wrong every time I started moving until the pain of that first step reminded me. It was the first decent forage haul in ages though. So on to the Pharmacy and the excruciating parkingg lot hobble. To the library because I must go every week for the holds or fines happen. To the Coop to try to pick up my bulk order, only my belief that they had not taken the right paperwork was correct, so they hadn't ordered it, though I had proof I paid and the lady remembered me. hobble, hobble, hobble. Try not to curse in front of children because OUCH. Squirrel brought in the food and I managed to get it away, but it was all a special kind of hell. I did not want to leave the sofa after food and lungs, but problems don't solve themselves. I spent an hour sorting out the image queue issue, which was way better than my initial estimate and buys me a little wiggle room.

I just... Ugh. Why must everything be so hard. It was 9:15 when I finished this I still needed to do tonight's tumblr programing and I hadn't touched the news. Sigh.

* I think I figured out the timing on LM wanting the door open. She can hear me moving around with the TV on, doing various household tasks, cooking, doing lung time with the TV on. Sometimes I do things on the internet while food is cooking, or I look things up. That's no when she bangs. I've noticed it's about 10-15 minutes after I settle in to work at my desk. My desk chair has a loud creak. I think she hears me sit and then waits a while to make sure I'm really settled and not jumping up and down every few minutes. My desk is right by her door, and she likes to sit near me while I work, just like she does with Squirrel. Bonus points, there is a chance that the Junior Beasties have settled by then too and they are less likely to rush at her in the excitement of her emergence, though that still happens about half the time. If she bangs to early they are nearly always right there wanting to visit with her and/or squirrel, and that's a bit much. Clever girl. She's been more social the last month than she's been since Hector died, though not as social as when Mache and her brother were. I really hope it's a trend.

* I find people taking Ambien baffling. Oh, I'm a life long insomniac and naturally nocturnal, so I get the desire for prompt sleep. Trust me, I do. Some of my earliest memories from when I was two and three involve insomnia and me trying to entertain myself silently by what little light came through my window at night. t's not the wanting a sleep aid that confuses me, but the willingness to take it in particular, knowing the side effects. I was never a sleep walker, though I dated one once, but I am the sort of person with a long history of talking and moving in my sleep. I hit walls. I sometimes sleep with my eyes open and sometimes the real things around me and the dream mingle. I once punched a lover who was innocently reading next to me square in the face, under the impression he was a certain ex-lover come back to kill me. (The real ex-lover never would have harmed me physically, but I have a long history of dreams where someone I love has been possessed, infected, turned into a vampire, etc., stretching all the was back to my second nightmare when I was three. It's not an abuse thing or anything. It's just how my mind has always worked). He wouldn't believe I was asleep as my eyes were open and he was understandably really upset. I had martial arts training and I hit with perfect aim and not soft either. I've never hurt a cat though I've slept with them in the bed most of my life and this was the only time I've hurt a person in my sleep, but you see my drift.

This is what I am like WITHOUT a drug that makes normal people sleep walk, sleep eat, sleep drive. Now imagine me wandering around without my consciousness, without the filter that I have while waking. Imagine me with access to kitchen knives having a dream about a serial killer or a zombie apocalypse. *shudder* No thanks. For fuckssake, Tuesday night, my character was a sixteen year old trapped in an attic without weapons with an equally fictional cousin about the same age. (I have gobs of cousins and "cousins" RL, but this was one of my dreams with an elaborate backstory, fully realistic sensory input, and a characteristic degree of object persistence.) ( Cu for a depiction of graphic violence: ) They all very much deserved it and it was self defense, trust me on this. Now imagine me having that dream wandering around naked in my apartment complex with my eyes open. No. Nope.

How do people take it and trust that they won't harm themselves or someone else, especially if they have access to a car?

I ought to have stayed up all night to forage, but I had people coming 'round about lunchtime, so I opted for a bit of low quality sleep, wisely as it turned out.

My first friend arrived a bit before noon. He took most of the remaining sorting project boxes upstairs and emptied the storage unit. I did not find the two missing boxes I was looking for, but we put everything back efficiently and rationally, so when next I need a thing up there it should be easier to find. The problem with the storage up 'til now was we had to put things up rather in a hurry during the move which meant things went up to get them out of the way and inevitably some of the wrong things went. That is solved. Long term storage in back, with financial records on the left; other things on the right and middle. Delicates, light things, and things I need access to rather randomly like cat carriers and suitcases up front. Progress!

We then came down to pull the Gothmas phases one and two boxes out, which is much easier. During this operation I delved and found one of the two missing boxes, plus two other small boxes needing sorting (not counting the Gothmas boxes we found in the storage unit which I will sort over the course of the three month Gothmas season as they are needed. The Gothmas phase one and two things are stacked in the living room for me to deal with some other day when I'm recovered. The other three stayed on my bed, alas, along with empty sorting project boxes for later.

By this point the second friend arrived. Out we went to take some things over to the first friend's house, then we went on a tour of stores with Halloween stuff up on the Guide. We found where the Halloween store is this year, and it looked like it was set up, but despite an email suggesting they were open, it was locked and dark. Sigh. The Halloween store is a traditional thing we like to do early in the Gothmas season, as it functions as a free haunted House what with the Animatronics and it's just fun to see what they had. Micheal's had all their stuff out, so we got to see this year's Halloween Village and we were the sort of rich that would let us buy all of the wee houses and accessories. Look, we are poor; we take our fun where we can get it. Value Villiage had all their stuff out to poke at, but Target was costumes only as yet. I picked up some small non-perishable groceries from the coop annex, and dropped the first friend off at work I hit another store for some other groceries and Friend Two and I had dinner and a really nice visit at her place. It was exhausting, but despite its disappointments, it was a good day.

Then, of course, I came home. there were things to put away and to sort if I ever wated to use my bed again. I realised I'd forgotten to take down the curtains for washing and that needed doing if I want to wear underwear tomorrow, and this is a major undertaking because of all the Squirrel and Livia proofing. I started the laundry and tackled the bed boxes. I mentioned before I'd dropped some weight when we took me off on of my meds a year and a half ago. My suspicion was it might be enough that I could wear the clothes I put away 3-5 years ago, even though it's not enough to make a noticeable difference to people looking at me. which meant the exhausting trying clothes on process, but I did get back everything I'd hoped to reclaim, which meant the small remainder could combine with a memento box to go upstairs, them being mementos and not things I ever expect to wear again anyway. I now own three shorts I can wear outside without embarrassment, plus the shorts that need to be redyed that i wear for nasty jobs around the house in summer. I have all four pairs of my Goth Trousers back. I think. I only tried one, but they are all the same sizish. (The labels claim to be the same size, but there was some variation in practice if memory serves). This is good as most of my other stuff is falling apart. When the weather cools I will wear them around for real and see if they really are back for good.

It was at this point I got beached on my bed, too tired to relocated for my lung treatment and exhausted by the idea of trying to put everything away, especially as all the activity exacerbated the particularly bearish pain I've been having most of a week. Luckily, Squirrel eventually came home and took the bo upstairs for me. I stowed fans and empty boxes. I got my lung meds. I rehung the curtains. I need to get the yarn I finger knitted last winter out and do up anchors for the larger Gothmas tree tomorrow, but I've got the one from last year already set up as a safety in case of cat for the night.

Neither Tavy nor Livia have ever been in a move, so they lack box anxiety. Tavy loses his shit every time, of course, but it's from excitement. People and things are moving around1 Objects are in unexpected places! Some objects are unexpected! He also made huge social progress today! When I went to get the Gothmas boxes out of my bedroom closet I expected Tavy to hide in terror because someone who isn't me or Squirrel was in his room, but instead of hiding he walked right up to my friend for pettins. It went really well until they fell for the tummy trap, but Tavy only nipped them instead of going for the full mauling. The he had more pettins! for a little guy who grew up in a feral colony and has only ever let four people pet him, this is Huge. he's known my friend's voice for years, of course, and he hangs out on my bed instead of hiding when visitor's come unless they approach him, but this is the first time he's ever wanted to be social with even a frequent visitor.

Livia hates all of it of course. She still hides in the closet from visitors and the fact we were pulling stuff out of her hiding closet had her crouched under the table that side. All I saw of her was a disappearing stripey tail. I don't know if she came out while we were gone, but she was still hiding when I went to put the boxes and fans away, poor thing. She did come out and sit in her window for lung time, but the curtain hanging terrified her. It will be extra treats and loves tonight and let us hope she used the litter....

I am likely too tired to look at the news much and shall go to bed once I've hydrated and bathed. My apologies for any this inconveniences.

* Thursday evening was social night, and one of the guests brought shockingly good gluten free brownies. Unfortunately, though I opened the door for LM to come out to see the guests, she stayed in Squirrel's room. He says she's a bit under the weather, which may account for it.

I have mentioned three cats, but I usually only write about the two younger ones. This is because LM is elderly, in frail health, and her eyesight is failing. Squirrel is her primary human, so she mostly stays in his room. It has a full attatched bathroom and thi is plenty of room for a cat who really does spend most of her time sleeping. We let her decide for herself the extent of socialization with the other beasts. Some weeks, she bangs for me to open the door, usually when Squirrel is asleep or out, and when she signals she's had enough, I shoo any junior beasties out of her room and close it back up. Some times the door is only open for an hour. Sometimes it is open all evening and/or all night. Sometimes she goes several days not wanting to interact at all; sometimes she really wants company. I generally open the door on nights we have guests, as Tavy, who is the main stressor for her generally spends that time sleeping on my bed, and Livia generally spends it in her hide. (Tavy can best be described as aggressively social with other cats and rather intense; Livia shares LM's interest in hanging out peacefully in the vicinity of other clowder members, but it's not entirely clear she can see the difference between the two. Generally there is a little hissing when I first open the door and the junior kitties run over to see LM, but they all settle in fairly quickly unless Tavy is in one of his hyper moods, in which case I remove him). LM likes to come out and check out guests once they've settled down and stopped moving. She's not outgoing with guests the way Mache was up until the last few years she was alive, but she likes to hang out and the vicinity and see who is there.

I want to make clear that even though I don't write about her as much since Tavy came, I do love her very much. The arrangements currently in place are ones we made to allow her to spend her sunset years in comfort and to give her as much control over her interaction level as possible in order to limit both the stress of isolation and the stress of socialization, if that makes sense.

* So here's where I am on the Preacher. I was someone who read the comics starting from the original release. They were cool for their time, but they don't age well and my tolerance for things like the ubiquitous casual homophobia, the ableism, the fatphobia, rape as a running joke, and the two dimensional smurfette not like other girls version of Tulip have dropped dramatically in the intervening time. I literally just took my whole collection of originals to the comic store to sell on Monday because I can't imagine ever wanting to reread them despite the bits that do remain interesting in them, like the design and deconstruction of Cassidy, or Jesse Custor's relationship to God.

The show is kind of a hot mess too, but I significantly prefer it despite it's faults (the mess they made of Tulip in season two, the fatphobia, the ableism, the treatment of the characters of colour who aren't Tulip). I really love the Tulip redesign. This version is a real improvement despite some problems. I am fine with the way they changed up things like the Eccarius interlude. I really appreciate them going with a bisexual Cassidy, though I rather wish they would go further in exploring that, and I have some worries that they may be too in love with the character to show the darker aspects from the comics. I liked what they did with the angel and demon duo. I have serious concerns about the use of Hitler as a character, but apparently Tulip beating up and killing NAZIs was a thing I very much needed to see even though I had no idea that was a thing I desperately wanted until they were all on a bus to hell.

So basically, the show is problematic as hell and I don't really trust it, but I keep watching it because the things it does well it does really well. I watch it warily, sometimes wincing, but damned if this wasn't my favorite season even if I disliked a whole big storyline (Allfather, Humperdoo) that was ironically too much like the original characters despite the changes in sequence within the narrative and most of the plot.

So I keep watching for Tulip and for the bits of brilliance like the Eccarius plot and out of curiosity to see how they will make the pieces they kept from the original fit with the different story they are often telling, if that makes sense.
