* I have finished season four of sons of Anarchy. The desensitization seems to be complete, the triggers worn down smooth enough, though of course that doesn't mean I don't have feelings about it. I have to say that the music stays really on point. This season was frustrating, in that the characters kept doing the politics wrong. *smile* I kept gaming things out and they kept making obviously wrong decisions instead of ones with plausible potential for reasonable outcomes.

I kept thinking of this Werewolf table top I was in during the mid '90's. My character was leader of the pack, very serious about honor. The GM had cleverly maneuvered her into a situation where two sets of vows conflicted. She paused for only a second or two, then made her choice. The GM looked shocked and pointed out the perfectly obvious betrayal my character was committing the pack to, and didn't I want to think about it some more? I looked him in the eyes and asked, "Would agonizing about it improve the situation?" Him: No, but... Me: Then we go into the Umbra and try to salvage what of our honor we can.

This is how I am and always was, when the raft hit the waterfall, when the boy was clutching the knife. I take the best path I can see and save the analysis for the aftermath. Generally fast is better when shit gets real.

I still am in this weird place watching the show. I can entirely empathize with why people choose this, particularly why War veterans were drawn to forming these clubs in the first place; at the same time, I can't imagine ever wanting to do this myself. I get the human psychology logic of it; it is a life I would have utterly rejected even if I hadn't accidentally tangled with the frigging Warlocks as a teen.

Watching Juice in his agonies, especially so close after the Kavanaugh Hearings, I kept thinking of the eighteen year old I was: back straight, chin up, utterly unashamed as I looked the only person in the room who's opinion actually mattered when the Warlocks tried me. He was clearly a Vietnam Vet come out in his full regalia to straighten out some mess the son and nephew of his brothers had gotten himself into. He was not expecting my calm, cold, fury and my unhesitating obviously truthful responses to the nonsense I'd been accused of. I was clearly not what he expected, and I think I was meant to be cowering instead of quietly outraged. The other two the Warlocks sent weren't that much older than us and not fully kitted out, so I made my case to the one sitting on my Mother's kitchen chair as if it were a throne.

The risk of the truth told straight and clear was worth it for me, though the price was high. I kept thinking that the truth would have been much simpler and more apt to serve in most of the story lines: with Juice, with Bobby, with the whole J.T. mess. Better to throw oneself forward into a messy situation with the truth told plain and to take the 50/50 odds than to mess about getting increasingly more compromised and worsening chances for a good outcome. The fact that they were mostly rescued by Deus ex CIA doesn't change the fact that without the last minute saved they'd all have been fucked by the lack of a little upfront social courage.

Which doesn't make it bad art, mind. Most people would much rather lie and hope than look judge and accusers in the eyes and talk it through. My accusers broke and betrayed themselves as a couple jealous teenagers who tried to get two of us killed because none of the three of us wanted to fuck them. My judge took a face saving compromise brokered by a weasel when he realized how easily he and his brothers had been manipulated into trying to big foot some high school dating drama. Most people don't figure the odds the way I do and tend to see through as the fastest road out. I get that, I do. Most people take what looks like the short term easy without thinking through the next series of steps an consequences. Juice took a situation where he had an even chance of nothing much happening vs. losing the club and exchanged it for pretty much dead either way short of a miracle. Bobby really fucked shit up because he couldn't bring himself to tell Otto a hard truth and live with the short term consequences. Frustrating to watch, though beautifully executed.

I plan to take another run at Hannibal at some point soon when time and spoons allow. It's been long enough I pretty much have to start at the beginning. I may skip over the section that is triggery at end of season one/early season 2. We'll see how I feel when I get there. I can't remember how many episodes into season two I quit because they kept dancing on my triggers, so even if I do skip some, I'll have to come back in the middle of a bad patch. With desensitization, going slow is crucial to success. I know doing this is long term good for me and I've been spoiled on enough things that I really want to make it to season three which looks very relevance to my interests.

Those of you who are long time readers will know that is what I always advise parents do when there kid is being picked on. I know y'all are sick of hearing this, but it really is the best way to protect your kids, especially if you kid is LGBTQIA or another minority. Hand write a dated, contemporaneous log of all incidents. Threaten to sue. Get a lawyer if they don't step up. It is the fastest way to get a school culture to change not jut for your student, but for every student who comes after. take no shit. Accept no shared blame. Make yourself a thorn in their side, a potentially incredibly expensive thorn. Public Schools are by definition short of funds and it is cheaper to retrain staff and provide admin guidance than it is to fight and worse yet lose a law suit. Some will inevitably fight in red areas particularly, but most won't, and either way you win and so does your kid and all the ones coming up behind them.

* Wednesday morning, after I'd settled in to prepare for sleep, Tavy jumped up on my bed, checked out a few napping positions, then wandered off. He did something similar with the cat cave the night before he started napping there so I’ve hopes of him sleeping in bed with me soon. He definitely has decided I am his primary human and Squirrel the back up, but he's fairly geographical integrated, moving freely in and out of squirrel's room and napping under his bed of an afternoon. He really likes being held and I wish I could afford a baby bjorn to try him in.

He had a small scare Wednesday afternoon. I had to stop back home with MrBumblepants after forage before taking him home for logistical reasons. he poked his head out to see if it was me, and spotted MrBumblepants instead. stranger! Panic! He hid and didn't come out all evening, but that was his usual post scamper nap time. My suspicion was he fell asleep in his hide, so was not alarmed. I told Squirrel I'd start warring if he wasn't out by 1:30AM, but i refused to panic before then. I spotted him chilling on my bed at 11:30. By 11:40 we were playing spider, so it's all good.

At bedtime, I convinced LM to hang out in the bed for a short pettin and a nap. Tavy turned up, gave her a good sniffing, which she tolerated even though their current hiss radius is usually in the 2-3 feet range atm, and he started trying out mesting spots, so I had hopes of peaceable kingdom. Premature hopes, alas, as he proceeded to try to eat my feet. I grabbed the bag of pompoms I keep by my bed out of habit because sometimes Hector needed them before he really started to get sick, and lobbed one his way. He thought this was maybe the best thing ever and had a great time with those, but all the excitement disturbed poor LM, so she glared and growled a bit before stalking off. Eventually I wore him out and he left too. Squirrel reports he turned up by his pillow to stare when Squirrel was bedding down a bit later, but didn't stay. So he's still not ready for bed cuddles, but I do think it'll be soon.
