* Social Security call back last Monday was an obviously exhausted and beaten down sounding woman. I'm sure it's absolutely terrible over there with terrified and likely furious Seniors calling all day. I apologized for bothering her because the phone tree was gone. I was polite as it was possible to be and I also laced in appreciation for her hard work and all the hard work they do over there, sincerely meant.

At one point I gave a little cough as I was doing the thing where I slowly lower chest elevation in preparation for sleep. She started apologizing like I'd yelled. I felt terrible and told her she needn't apologize and it was just a cough. I reiterated that I new how slammed they must be and how difficult it all is. It really made me wonder how rough other callers were being with people who's livelihoods were threatened through no fault of their own, that she be so alarmed by a cough.

By the time I was thanking her for her public service and wishing her the best of luck at the end of the call there were a tiny bit of life in her voice.

It was a small thing, a tiny drop of the bucket, done in the same spirit that leads me to apologize to a customer service worker when the person ahead of me has been a dick because someone owes them a damned apology, and then crank up my politeness to eleven. Nobody deserves to be treated like that by a single asshole customer, let alone by their own government. I can't really fix that, but I can least do my best to convey that I see the other person as a human being and think they deserve better.

The treatment of government workers in this country makes me furious.

All I can do is signal boost and hope people keep fighting for them and for all of us.

* Tuesday I had one of my periodic mega torso muscle spasm things, which ate a couple hour until I could get it under control. Luckily is was after I ran a couple essential, time sensitive errands.

Wednesday I was still aftershocky, but at the minor inconvenience level. I did errands by myself as two Millennials were making their homemade lasagna on the grand scale. The lasagna was magical.

In other news, My Social Security didn't arrive. On two previous occasions when Republicans were dicking around with Social Security, it came a day or two late, but under the current circumstances it is extra concerning. Have I been declared dead? Deleted from the roles by a teenager who decided I was disabled enough? Or are payments just delayed by assholery, but not gone, gone? I actually have some hope it's just delay as I checked in with a friend on SSI who did get theirs.

Still, there is no way to fix it until my in person appointment and that will be too late for Housing auto-withdraw.

Let's all cross our fingers, shall we?

* My sleep schedule is still messed up, but luckily the meds disruption was only one day. (On time is ideal, but I don't have to be the kind of strict a lot of people do. Approximate works okay with most of my stuff. That said, three hours off on an anti-nausea medication is a special kind of unpleasant.)

Saturday, we did errands in the morning, because I'm not the only one dramatically sleep disrupted. They are no longer shopping like a hurricane is coming, but the drivers are dangerous and there is a different kind of panicky going on at the grocery store, which is hard to categorize. We were at the big ethical grocery (The Employee owned one), and I noticed they had way more people on shift than is usual for even the first weekend of the month, which suggests they've adjusted to the panic buying and anticipated both in ordering staple foods and staffing how people were going to react to Trump crashing the economy this week.

I still need to hit two more stores this week for things about to be in short supply that are important and necessary. I am exhausted.

We did do a little errand each for me and Goth Millennial for which the other stayed in the car because we were exhausted. We were supposed to go downtown, but had very little left and both had groceries to put away. (Goth Millennial is being jerked around again and hasn't been paid in almost a month for aid work. Things are getting pretty gnarly here at the Cat Asylum, but nothing can be done just yet as we have to wait on things out of our hands. *gestures at Trump and Musk setting the government on fire*).

There was a big demo with thousands of people downtown proper near the courthouse/city hall, but we weren't up to it. There has been a regular Friday demonstration more central downtown for decades. We get a lot of other demonstrations on different days generally as well. This is a very left wing town. It's a small city, but we do love to demonstrate.

We did pass a small, separate demonstration on the was home, but they had hands off signs, so I waved and beeped.

I am double booked Tuesday for two time sensitive things that protect my benefits. (I tried to get wait listed. I tried to move the theoretically more moveable one. It is impossible, which doesn't surprise me. *gestures to the government being on fire* The appointments are 40 minutes apart on check in and about fifteen minutes apart for space. I am terrified I won't make it. My plan is to try to go very early for appointment one in hopes somebody cancels. I have already gathered the paperwork.

I am FUCKED if I miss either.

Then I get inspected on the 11th, a thing I am in no way prepared for, and can't get anyone to help with. *See Goth Millennial being not paid.* I have tried calling around for other help. No joy.

* I spent a lot of the last week and a half dealing with bureaucracy. I had it really streamed lined in the prep phase. I should have known it was too easy. They literally moved the office where i was supposed to turn it in, plus all the associated proceedures. my sleep cycle is a mess.

Friday I stayed up to do phone calls. Later, I realised too late I'd forgotten half of them. I'm also dealing witrh yet more appartment management company bullshit, plus physical stuff related to the reason i need surgury.

I got my Covid second booster, so expect to be a mess for the weekend. I wrestled with it ethically. I am in the high risk group (for three reasons now), but also there are countries where people have had no shots at all. What decided me not to wait until August was Omicron BA variant contagiousness plus my upcoming surgury. This is agony and my shoulder is deteriorating badly thanks to the extreme limits on my physio. I don't want to lose another two to three months for a posative COVID test right before surgury.

I still feel like an asshole snatching a shot someone likerly needs more than I do.

* We are planning to use most of squirrel's tax rebate to get a working oven, but the dishwasher is also broken. (The dishwasher is a safety thing because I am medically fragile. Not having a working oven is playing havoc with my nutrition.) My share of the oven plus fixing the dishwasher will likely be in the $600-700 range.

(I am disabled and queer in at least three senses of the word and on a fixed income).

Why not all of his tax refund? he’s in a medical insurance gap and is having an emergent health crisis. He couldn’t have paid for both things anyway.

* Watching Melissa Harris-Perry's discussion of Detroit, I kept thinking of 14th Century cities. This isn't a slam on Detroit. Hear me out. Detroit is a city that had 1.8 million people in 1950. It is now a city of half that, with a quarter of it's 1950 population leaving in the last decade. They lost all that tax base, services are spread thin. People are living on blocks full of vacant houses. Houses are burning and no one is coming to put it out as there is no one to report it and the fire department is spread thin. The murder rate is scary high and there aren't close enough to enough police.

Now think about Medieval England for a minute. Before the Great Pestilence, the life span of a family in the city was three generations. The Death rate was so high do to the prevalence of vermin, sewage in the water supply, higher exposure to contagion, etc. that cities needed a constant large influx of folks from the countryside to make a fairly stable population. Then came the Famine, the influenza epidemic, and the sheep and cattle murrain of 1315-17, which killed a lot of people, and slowed the influx to cities. Things started picking back up, but then the Great Pestilence of 1348-50, which killed 30%-60% of the population depending on where you lived. Then there was the particularly heartbreaking outbreak of 1360–1363 that disproportionally killed children and teens, who then failed to live to help replace the numbers lost in the previous outbreak, further depressing the population numbers. Then it came back a decade later, and again in 1400, when Europe's population hit it's lowest point in centuries. Whole villages and small towns simply disappeared. There was a massive labor shortage everywhere, which had all sorts of effects I've written of elsewhere.

It also had the effect of dramatically shrinking cities. After all, urban populations were hit hard for the same reasons that epidemics are always worst in Medieval cities. Even with some folks fleeing serfdom in the countryside trying to move somewhere new where no one will know they weren't born free choosing cities instead of different rural areas where the Lord/Lady, Abbot/ess, or manager is offering better terms than on the home farms, there literally were not enough people to fill all those houses and shops that the Pestilence depopulated. Out in the countryside, people were abandoning the less arable land, Nobles were switching from farming to sheep, and the forests were regrowing to fill areas that had been farmed for centuries. What did the cities do when in the course of a few years or decades (depending on which city), there were half as many people as there had been a generation before? People moved to the center, where there were still markets and shops and neighbors to help in case of fire or break ins. It wasn't safe being the only family on your block when the looters or a fire came through. People upgraded their living quarters. If they inherited a better house further in, all to the good. Alternately, there were all these abandoned building to cannibalize to build a better house or upgrade an existing one. Survivors had lived through a series of horrific events. They were not used to letting resources go to waste in the lean times, and many of them were suddenly better off so they reconfigured the shape of the city where necessary, but they ultimately rebuilt and carried on. The cities contracted, but they survived for the most part.

I get that it's more complicated now to simply move people into the areas where the resources are, especially with unofficial segregation still in effect there, but still, if you shrunk Detroit, it would be easier to supply water, sewage, power, schools, police, and firemen. But of course it won't happen that way, and I have a good ideas of the legal and political obstacles involved. Still, I couldn't help thinking of all those ahell shocked plague survivors loading their possessions onto carts and shifting house in all those 14th century cities and towns.

* Am I watching the Oscars? No. I find awards ceremonies deadly dull for the most part, so I only watch if there's a really good reason, such as an interesting presenter or important movie. I hate Seth McFarlane's transphobic as and watching him smarm and smug for that long would make me all stabby. It doesn't mean there aren't specific awards I care about. After all, I'm still angry Gabourey Sidibe lost to Sandra Bullock that time. It just means that I'd much rather go see the results compiled on a website than sit through all the boring. I'm sure if someone does something particularly interesting or heinous, I'll hear about it. Similarly, I'll see the really elegant and ridiculous fashions Monday and/or Tuesday. so no Oscars for me.
