* Black Sails rewatch episode 4:
It was episode Four that made me think that Flint and Lord Hamilton were lovers first time through. The relationship between Flint and Miranda made no sense as a love story where they ran off together out of love. It made way more sense if James and Thomas were lovers. To me the sex scene was just more proof. He stares at her clinically as she rides him, as we used to say "lying there like a dead puppy." It looks mechanical for her, and for him a thing needing to get over with before he can get on to something more interesting. You contrast it with the Charles Eleanor scene, where he is enthusiastic and clearly passionate both sexually and emotionally. Her expression is more complicated emotionally, but she clearly wants sex with him despite knowing full well how messy that is for her personally and politically. There is real affection there, as well as naked lust, you can see it in the curl of their hands as his fingers linger just before the screams start. It is a small think, but it says everything. with Flint/Miranda, I kept wondering who's benefit was it for. Was he a human dildo or were they doing something performative for Guthrie in the next room, or was it a bit of both? I'm not sure, and likely now we'll never know. In any case, first time around, it was from here I was waiting to see if they were going to have the ovaries to go all the way on a gay or bi Flint, and was pleasantly surprised to not be disappointed this once.
Here too was the issue of the fuck tents. I admit that while I like a gay Billy Bones, I think an ACE one would be even more amazing. ACE characters on TV are so incredibly rare and nearly always get made into sexuals later in the series. Narratively gay Billy made sense, but I think evidence wise an asexual or hyposexual Billy makes more sense. Given they did not chicken out on Flint, I actually have hopes for Billy in season three. I am not used to having hopes for good representation on TV of nearly anything, but Black sails has actually earned a bit of trust. Whichever way it goes, I expect it to be amazing.
I think the theme of episode Four is vulnerability. Eleanor, Max, and Miranda are vulnerable because of societal sexism, and the show does explore that, though certainly their own choices have made things worse. Charles Vane is vulnerable because of love, Flint because of his trust in Miranda, Mr. Guthrie because of his lack of familial support and inability to see his daughter as truly competent. Billy is vulnerable because of his impostor syndrome. Jack is vulnerable because of his hubris in previous episodes. In retrospect, Anne is vulnerable because of her past. Even Randall is vulnerable because of his attachment to his cat.
