* It finally rained last night. Today I woke up to normal skies and a reasonable air temperature.

* Me watching Pompeii: That's not how it works. That's not how any of this works. the people who made it are at least as confused and flat out wrong as the ones that made Braveheart. It was too much of a mess historically to ignore the problems and take as cheese.

* I am finding The Great Wall visually gorgeous, but incredibly frustrating as whoever picked the subtitle font decided to make the lettering so tiny that I literally cant read it without pressing my face up against the screen. I can make out the capital letters and the 't's', so can generally guess single words like "wait" or attack", but I have to guess all the sentences from context. Why would they do this? Most people are not going to be watching this on a massive, super expensive wall sized widescreen TV. There was no descriptive video option and no option to go fullscreen so no way to recover the Chinese dialog. (I prefer widescreen as a rule, but I also prefer having visible subtitles). I know they know how to do visible captioning, as the English for hearing impaired is in huge, easily visible letters, mostly printed on the black background under the picture. why couldn't they do that with the translated dialog as well? Accessibility is a thing, people. It's 2017.

- Ship in a Bottle. Moriarty is back and grumpy about them dropping that plot thread for four years. I still have lots of questions about how people can be in multiple locations inside the same holodeck. I do like the using the simulation to steal command codes trick. I've seen it done clumsily in lots of shows since, but it is lovely in it's simplicity here. I do like the ethically quandaries around Moriarity and the Countess' personhood and what to do with them. I also think this is the first time they have had Barkley appear in which it hasn't been about his psychiatric issues. He's just there doing his job, which is kind of nice.

- Aquiel. A Mystery, an unreliable narrator, Klingon social friction, and Geordi's creepy thing where he builds an imaginary relationship with a woman he's never met and acts accordingly, brain sex, and the Star Trek version of The Thing.

* I was watching part of the Yves Saint Laurent biopic from a couple of years ago over lunch. It got to the scene where they were negotiating with the Americans via interpreters, and I wandered off into the kitchen to clean up lunch and change out a fly strip. I had this strange feeling of rightness, and then it dawned on me, I was half half listening in two languages while tidying up bowls and such. My parents' bilingual dinner parties, when we had house guests from from France. Soft simultaneous polite conversation. Everything right with the world for a little while at least.

* Yesterday we had wind storm such as normally only occurs in Autumn. The Tiny terror does not approve. I had all this stuff I was supposed to do this afternoon, but I somehow made a mistake with my alarm, and did not wake until I was too late for one so put the rest off.

* I think it's so hard to let go of Black Sails because I've never had a show to watch that was so intensely, specifically for me. I am so used to media being made for everyone else, and having to find things to love in it. * So I'm trying a Wonder Woman rewatch. Keep in mind that I saw them first in real time when they were brand new, to the point that I remember all the little girls twirling on the playground, singing Wonder Woman and pretending to transform. These were so important when I was a kid, in an era when boys liked to pretend only white boys were allowed to be superheroes and everyone else had to be villains or damsels to rescue. Diana had a job and was a superhero too. It was incredibly important and exciting to see her on TV I watched them in syndication into the '80's, but I likely haven't seen them since...I'm guessing 83? '84? The pilot rather cheesy by modern tastes, I fear, and the dialog is rather wooden. You can see the direct line from the Adam West Batman to here, though this isn't that kind of funny. Oddly enough, I had forgotten it was meant to be WWII and they were fighting NAZIs, this despite me clearly remembering everything else about the plot of the pilot. It is just so very seventies in look and feel and content, that I kept forgetting watching it that this is supposed to be the '40's. I am not impressed with the male sidekick, who is no where near her caliber,and I have other qualms. It has not aged as well as one would hope, but it was actually watcheable unlike Green Hornet, and I've hopes of it smoothing out a little next episode. I just... It's hard to separate the reality from how incredibly important it was to a generation of little girls.

* Health Update: I'm about half as sick as I was this time last week, which is a more functional thing. The steroids did way cut down the amount of gunk in my lungs, though I'm also clearly still infected with something. I am really struggling with things like food, though there is no real way to tell if it is the infection, the steroid's after effects, or the ravages of antibiotics. The Doctor prescribed a new long term lung treatment, but I'd already spent two hours at the Doctor and the pharmacy's usually overwhelmed that close to close. I also forgot to check if any money had cleared before I left. I've called a few more things in and will go pick up the mess another day. I am still heavily medicated even by my standards and the infection leaves me exhausted.

There were no tomato or basil starts when I went to the co-op and it turns out I can't even order a gravy flat as I'd planned to as the distributor wasn't even selling them. Sigh. I did get dried mushrooms there and emergency perishables on the way home, but my dream of tzaziki and naan will have to await another mission on another day. I do have a nice set of greens planted outside and have radically reorganized to take best advantage of the sun. My choice to leave the perennial herbs up high on the shelving has proved an excellent idea as the sage and sorrel are thriving and quite happy to poke up through the bars. I'm being liberal with the sluggo even though I haven't seen slugs yet as they are brutal with young greens, and I have a lot of fragile volunteers seeded out of last years crop. Let us hop we get tomatoes and carrot too, as last year was a bit of a disappointment in the carrot green department.

* I love that the late breakfast genre of still life painting was actually a thing.

Next time you see someone mocking a woman for posting pictures of her breakfast, take a moment to imagine the time and energy men used to spend painting picture of theirs.

* Black Sails XXXVIII: Orpheus and Eurydice and Ambiguous Oracles.

I have a lot of feelings about this one. I'm normally a fan of ambiguity and unreliable narration, but in this instance I am left with a fury so deep I'm not sure what to do with it. For the record, I am agnostic on the Schrodinger's Cat situation. I leaned one way after first watching; I lean another way after deep analysis, wavered back and forth, but I am not really convinced either way and honestly wish they had not left us all with this mess. I will explain my reasons and thinking in the analysis, but I suspect I will not leave anyone happy. I know I'm not, but I do feel better having chewed it over at length. I do mean at length. Edited to add: I am leaning towards team live cat after the edit at the bottom and literally more than half a day writing about it.

Side note: Can we please have this cast in all the things? There are so many incredibly skilled actors here. I know Mcgowen and Stephens have particularly strong careers, but can we please put the rest of them, particularly Ms. Kennedy and Toby Schmitz in lots of projects, but really all of them in everything?

* Today was a total fail. I did manage fourish hours of sleep before getting up for the Doctor, but it was a molasses day. Uncooperative body. Cat clinging to my arm or trying to climb onto my chest or shoulder. everything taking subtley crucially longer than it needed too. traffic congestion. Slow pedestrians. The ticket machine freezing for two key minutes. It all added up to me missing my window by a literal two minutes. I am not convinced this is the right antibiotic, and my reschedule to find out if the lab results match my antibiotic isn't until April 3rd, so if the antibiotics don't kick in tomorrow, I will just have to learn to live with the pneumonia until sometime next month. Let's hope they kick in tomorrow, shall we.

All I actually managed today was hanging the sheets a task always made more adventurous by Tavy, who button who gets as excited as a sugar high second grader on parachute day and expresses this by trying to maul one whenever one tries to do anything at all with the fitted sheet.

* Things needed doing, so I masked up and dragged myself out to do them, despite getting out of breath on the walk to the bathroom. I needed to do a small thing for a neighborhood friend and go to the Doctor (of course), but also we were running out of key food items which meant forage and a grocery store not in my neighborhood.

Something happened at forage that I wanted to mention, particularly as a reminder to able bodied people. DO NOT GRAB SOMEONE'S CRUTCH or other mobility device away from them. Yes, even if you think you are helping. Look, I know she thought she was helping, but she really, really wasn't. The carts there have an open work design, that means I can't just toss the crutch into the basket and have it stay there, so I have this plastic flat that once held plant starts that I put on the lower racks, and I slide the crutch through the top slots, with the flat holding the bottom of the crutch to keep it falling through the grate. It frees up my hands, keeps the crutch out of everyone's way, and I can use the cart as a walker but still have the crutch for when I need it. Only, the flat got knocked askew, so I'm bent over coughing, trying to resettle the flat and the crutch on the bottom rack. I just get everything reseated and ready to go when the wel meaning white lady yanks the crutch from my hands and out of it's slot, knocking the rack out of place and endangering my balance, meaning I had to retrieve my crutch from her and bend over again to readjust the rack and make sure everything is properly put back together. It would have been half the time and half the coughing if she'd just LEFT THE CRUTCH ALONE. She thought she was helping, but she undid my work because she assumed incorrectly the point of the exercise, and it didn't occur to her to ask first. Look, it's rude anyway, as that is essentially a body part, even though it's detached, but the point I'm making here, is you can't read my mind. You see me doing something, it may or may not be what you think I'm doing. I've been dealing with my spinal damage a loooong time. I know the safest way to alight from a bus and how to shop with an inconvenient basket design. I literally brought a plastic plant flat in from my car to put in my cart because I knew in advance I would need one.

I am absolutely not saying you shouldn't ask if I need help carrying something or whatever, because I often really do need that sort of help, but the magic word here is ASK. Consent is magic. "Would you like a hand with that?" is polite. Grabbing my crutch isn't. Yes, even if you really do mean well.

In other adventures in disability, I was behind a nice Ukrainian couple in line. He was mostly collecting the food, going back and forth with her to consult, while she mostly managed the children. The boy was five or six and I'd guess the girl was maybe four. she needed a lot more monitoring , and was tired, I think. Th boy was quiet and well behaved, and so they were mostly just corralling him in when he started to drift out of orbit without really paying attention to him. He was staring at me wide eyed and silent. Look, I'm a middle aged, goth with long hair, ambiguous gender presentation, a crutch, and a surgical mask, gasping like a fish out of water because I am having to shuffle around with an infection because milk and bread do not spontaneously generate. I get it, I really do. The stares are significantly less flattering than the ones I got back when I was a high goth androgyny with a tiger striped Mohawk, but people have been staring at me for one reason or another since I was twelve and I am used to it. If it had been an adult gaping at me like that, I likely would have been shirty, but I have a policy with small children where I give a sound bite explanation of whatever is causing the curiosity/distress/whatever, because I can remember being three and wondering why the guy on the bus had a constellation drawn on his face and I feel like it's more normalizing to explain a disability to a small child than to let it be an object of unspeakable taboo curiosity. This kid was too old to shout loud qquestions, but too young to dissemble interest, which says teachable moment to me. I figure better I explain to some little kid that some people have spinal damage you can't see and need help walking than have them assume walking is all or nothing with disability; or as in this case that some people have sick lungs and need a mask to protect themselves and others. I don't have a lot of feelings to hurt and other people might, and this way next time the little guy sees someone with a mask, he'll likely think 'oh, someone with lung trouble' and not stare. I do not think the parents noticed. She was fussing with the little girl and he was getting bread,

Apparently the other antibiotic was good for lung infections, but not sinus ones, hence me seeming to improve and then reversing on it. I just started yet another antibiotic.
