I have questions. Was the sample taken from an intake or out flow pipe sample? It matters as there are studies from Rome that have suggested they tended to use lead for sewage and things like ceramics for drinking water, though I think the dispute is ongoing. Was the sample from a municipal pipe or a private pipe, because that can vary. If it was private, was it a legal pipe system or one of those ones designed to get around regulations about public vs. private pipes drawing on public cisterns in times of drought. Clearly we need a larger sample from multiple bits of pipe from all over town. If it was from the public system, we’d still be needing more samples both because of the intake vs. outflow issue, but also because Roman contractors were even more notorious than modern ones for fiddles and corruption. There is no guarantee all pipes are made to the same specs by reputable contractors. (Yes, the issues above are what inspectors are for, but also bribery was a Thing).

* The snow was down to patches and roads and sidewalks clear. I dragged myself out for forage, meds, library, and gas. I could not really afford the gas and money will be tight, but I had to do all the errands on empty as the bank is downtown and the gas up here. Luckily this tank gives one wiggle room a there was no real choice as to order of operations. I am exhausted and sluggish, as I've been all weekend. I can't tell if it's the weather or I'm coming down with something. Time will tell, I suppose.

The picture went out on the TV just as I settled in to lung. Initial attempts to restore it failed, which meant lugging the other analog behemoth out of my bedroom. When I went to try to switch wiring, I got the picture back, so looks like a loose wire and not a dead TV, so that's good. Still, I really need the nice people at the library to sort out the smaller, lighter TV this month, which means going out again tomorrow, and not for the supplies I am scary low on, as that is a whole other far loop and I will be worn out from being charming all evening to free fix it folk. The elderly used behemoths one can score for free on the internet have grown thin on the ground as most of the middle class couples have long ago switched to flat screen and have mostly given away their behemoths. I am not looking forward to the next round of scouting for one, so putting it off as long as possible is important, especially given how difficult, painful, and exhausting the dragging them home part is.

...I just discovered a thing I was supposed to take back to the library today in the (luckily dry) 30 gallon office tank, likely casually tossed there by Tavy in a moment of exuberance. it wasn't due, but there was a line, which means someone will lose to days they could have had it. Sigh. cats.

* I keep crying over footage from Houston. The image that really got me today was the one of the nursing home patients trapped in rapidly rising water, women in wheelchairs with water up to their chests and rising. I know they are all right, that the posting of the image by a relative saved their lives, since help came in time to get them out, but I keep imaging their fear, and how fragile they are. Every time I think of them, I start weeping again.

* One of the fundamental problems with me watching Game of Thrones is that the whole writing stopped being any good years ago thing means I don't really engage emotionally and I'm bored enough a lot of the time that I see all the structural bones. Me: they cut the whole thing with the horns from the books, so they need a way to bring down the wall, so they need an ice dragons, which may be in the book too, but I'm betting not as clumsily contrived, so they had to lure a dragon North, so they had to do the stupid plot holey bro-trip that repeats the thing with sending Yoren with the hand to Kingslanding, and anyway D&D really wanted the bro tip and who cares if anything during or about it makes sense, which means the whole thing with the telepathic communication between Lannister brothers, and accelerated teleportation between locations to an even more ridiculous extent, which means... Fuck, I forgot to listen to the dialog again.

I just... This show criminally wastes the talents of so many skilled actors with embarrassing and often clunky dialog. They started this episode with a dick conversation. They wasted so much time this season on stirring up pointless drama with usually misogynistic usually nonsense conversation that winded back people' arcs yet again, and forgetting people's back stories so that their behavior often makes no sense or trauma appears and disappears in the same scene, that they had to wind up a whole lot of character's arcs all at once abruptly this episode instead of using the season to gradually build various character arcs to meaningful moments. *Facepalm* Which means all these incredibly skilled actors are trying their damnedest to make their characters make sense DESPITE the writing instead of with the help of it. The slow also gives me time to get so focused on the fuck nonsense is so and so wearing instead of what they are saying.

It's been a criminal, heartbreaking waste of so much hard work and talent.

Addendum in response to reader comment:
The Clegane situation this season has been one of the wore examples of them turning his backstory on and off at the drop of the hat often within the same minute. I just... that poor actor, trying to make that mess WORK. It was very much one of the things I was thinking of when I wrote that. Him working through and over coming his trauma could have been so powerful this season if the writers, you know, understood trauma and how people process it and how to write a consistent character and character growth.

Instead it was ridiculous and embarrassingly bad. Again, not the actor’s fault any more than the mess they made of, say, Sansa Stark and Theon Greyjoy were the fault of the actors. The tendency they’d had all along to flip character traits, backstory, and development on and off randomly, has just accelerated to the point of over the top silly with Clegane especially the lat two episodes. They aren’t even pretending to be coherent any more.

Let people and employers buy into medicare, thus solving the escalating premiums, shortage of insurance providers, etc. problems, and adding healthier people to the Medicare pool won't hurt it. We could remove the Bush Era cap on pay in that prevents the wealthy from paying in their share while we are at it.

* I'm still poking at Dick Cavett. One of those things that comes of having been friends with my Mother my whole adult life is that I know my taste in men and my late mother's was a sort of venn diagram situation. Because the overlap was large enough for her to aesthetically enjoy most of my long line of good looking gentlemen starting in my teens and ending in Skye, and we could enjoy about half the same actors, I always food the areas of divergence baffling. Robert Mitchem was always puzzling to me. She considered him the epitome of sexy manliness. I just... never got it.

I've seen the 1972 Cavett/Mitchem interview a number of times over the years, but I think this time I'm old enough to get it. Still so not my type, but I can finally see what she saw in him, and it rather explains my father too, another source of honest bafflement to me throughout my life. (I loved them both dearly and they were one of those rare 'til death do they part couples. I could get why he chose her, but never could fathom why she chose him). The thing I'm really noticing about Robert Mitchem this time is, he's got that thick tough guy working class accent and genuine shit kicker manly man credentials, but he really loves his family and is faithful to his wife. He drinks too much and goes off and has adventures, but he doesn't fool around with other women and he always comes home. He's funny in a low key, often self depreciating way, and clearly smarter than the image he projects. My dad was a genuine motorcycle riding greaser with a thick working class accent turned beatnik who wanted nothing more than the picked fence life and never cheated on her once and who could keep up with her intellectually. Not the same, but in the ballpark, if you see what I mean.

* ...And the Vincent Price Dick Cavett is all about Vincent Price's one man show as OSCAR WILDE. The clip they have of him telling of a boy who loved him in school gave me shivers. Why did they not film the whole thing so we could watch it now? It must have been brilliant from the little sample preserved here.

* I spent most of the week pondering why we've pulled out of the Paris Climate Accords. Objectively the Accords are good for business and the planet. Pulling out does not benefit 45 personally on a financial level as far as I can tell, which is his usual reason for doing anything. It is bad for business and property owners. Exxon and the other oil companies are against it. It's likely going to harm workers as there are already more jobs in clean energy than there are in coal and sticking with the goals we agreed on would create jobs. His stated reason are entirely lies as China and India did not "get a better deal" and the "evidence" he sited was clearly pulled out of his ass. I was honestly stumped. Thursday night, a friend pointed out that he's likely doing it for the benefit of the Russian Oil Company, Rosneft, and so it's likely a favor for Putin and his Kleptocrats at the expense of our country and the long term survival of civilization and the World. Ah. I have mulled it since and it does seem the only logical explanation.

* There is a hole in my ceiling and I am cleaning up plaster mess, but I no longer have a drip. The bad news is I woke up sick. They are giving it time to dry and should be back next week to plaster. It did mean two men in work boots with ladders and tools, which Tavy did not like. he held out until they had to come into my room to shut off the water, at which point he hid. We did get back to sleep by lunch time, and he curled up where he could look right into my face from close up when he was worried. Oh, and we pilled poor LM.

Judging by type of cough, this is likely viral. It's debilitating and messing hard with my ability to concentrate, is making me irritatingly emotional, and will likely mess with the quality of my posting this weekend, but I am not expecting this one to escalate like the two month pneumonia of February/March did. I may need to lie down a lot and my typing with be the suck, but do not worry about me.

* They actually ran the Dick Cavett with Robin Williams. Part of why it was so magic at the time was that he was only on Mork and Mindy, or in clubs doing Improve. There would be comedy specials soon after, which we loved, but back then, unless you could go to see him live, you didn't get to see what he was like outside of that half hour show, which we mostly had to listen to on the radio as choir practice let out when the show was starting. If we rushed home we could see the last act. There was no looking them up on line back then and no video tape. If you missed a thing you missed it all all you could do was hope for reruns. I'm not sure I can convey any of this to anyone younger than me, that we had literally never seen anything like this, and we had no way of going back and watching this particular performance again. I saw this show once nearly four decades ago, and my Mother and I would still reference it when she was alive, our mutual experience of it, the only real proof we had that we'd seen it at all, much as with that mind blowing Richard Pryor show that got cancelled almost right away as it freaked out the Network Suits.

It turned out it was a two night thing, with Robin Williams doing his first ever talk show interview, which I had not seen as a child in '79, as the first night. It was the second night that Mother and I saw with the improvised pseudo Shakespeare. His humor turns out to be sporadically rather more casually racist than I remember him being later in his career, which breaks my heart more than a little, even though I know his later stuff wasn't cringe worthy that way. The pseudo Shakespeare was delightful though, and way more racy and homoerotic than I was able to understand at that age. It holds up, where so much of the rest of it doesn't. It is kind of amazing to me that Cavett was able to keep up as well as he did, even knowing Cavett had a background in stand up and was a comedy writer before he because an interviewer. Robin Williams eventually outpaced him, but the by play was hilarious and they really did shockingly well together. I am very glad I got to see it, even if the rest of it was a tad disappointing.

The crowd work had a few cute moments, but mostly was piffle that didn't really go anywhere. I think the more focused premise in the Shakespeare bit helped by giving them a framework to hang the nonsense on, making the jokes more apt to land.

I am suspecting I conflated it with a second occasion as there is a bit I remember that wasn't in there.
