* A rant about US history and the evangelical view of US history slightly revised from elsewhere:

So someone on tV during a change over was talking about how when Washington was twenty one he got his first commission as if this was inspiring and I'm like, "But Washington completely fucked up. Like he fucked up that command so badly that he perpetrated a massacre after the other side surrendered creating an international incident It was nearly a career ender. He had to return to Virginia and and spent ages slowly rehabilitating his reputation. I get the point that young people can do great things, but maybe Washington's first military commission is not a great example of that, although given the person invoking it, it may be apropos.

I have Feelings about this sort of thing. Yes, that generation did great things and it could have gone so much worse (eyes France), but I hate the whole deification aspect. These were seriously flawed individuals, and I don't like the pretense that they weren't. Franklin was fucking brilliant. he also couldn't keep it in his pants to save his life. I tend to agree with Jefferson politically (except for on continuing slavery, banking, and some other obvious things) but he was a shitty human being in a whole host of ways. (Physical coward Enslaved human beings. Sally Hemmings was what 13? 14? And his wife's half sister which... eeeew!) Washington talked a big game about freeing slaves, but when he discovered he could make money if he forced them to have kids and he then sold them? Bye bye principles. I refuse the impulse to smooth that shit over.

Every time I see one of those creepy ass Evangelical pictures with Jesus handing down the constitution or Washington portrayed as a saint or whatever I get so angry. And the funny thing is? Washington would have hated it even more.

Those guys were deists for fuckssake, and Washington himself was wildly uncomfortable with the way he was being made into an icon in his lifetime. He was not naturally public speaker, and he had a complicated relationship with power. He spent the years after the war trying to walk a careful line between using the star power his role in the war gave him to shore up the idea of first the confederation, then the united states and he deep discomfort with he way people wanted him to be a new king. He never wanted to be an image instead of a man and the Jesus/Washington fan art would have skeeved him to the bone. It goes against everything he stood for.

Again flawed as hell as a man, but not that sort of evil.

And this is my fundamental issue with evangelicals and republicans generally. They want the images they create in their heads instead of the real things.

They literally worshiped a really ugly golden idol of the Florida Man at CPAC this year. For people claiming to be the only true Christians and who are always sticking the ten commandments everywhere, they sure don't know the bible. I'm pretty sure "Thou shalt have no other gods but me" is right up there on the don't do it list.

No the "Democrats" aren't censoring Dr. Seuss. The Seuss estate decided on their own to stop publication of a handful of low sellers with imagery they understandably don't particularly want to be associated with anymore.

Take it from me, a person who spent a big chunk of my professional life working in and shelf reading children's libraries: I looked at the cancelled titles and literally only recognized two of them. These are not popular books. I remember seeing the zoo one around, but I've never read it.

The only one with any real circulation of the set is Mulberry Street. When I was asked to read it to kids, I used to deliberately cover that character with my thumb, because it's not okay. Odds are if people really want this to keep publishing you could edit that out pretty easily Really though? Odds are if you check the titles you won't recognize most of them either.

I did look, and the zoo one? Wow! Yeah, I'd not show that to kids. Eww. I can see why the family doesn't want to be selling that. The other ones honestly didn't strike me as worth the effort.

I'm a lot happier remembering Seuss for the many, many good books he wrote instead of his most embarrassing efforts. If you see hysterical coverage about how democrats are yanking the Cat and the Hat out of libraries it's a big fat lie. cat in the Hat and the other popular titles aren't ceasing publishing and no one is calling for book burning. You'd think republicans would support the estate's free market decision to stop producing books that don't sell, but they are Grade A hypocrites.

That "founded as a Christian Nation" crap has been going on for a long time - an uncle forwarded an email containing a bunch of it to me some 12+ years ago. (Couldn't help myself, pointed him at Jefferson's tombstone with an explanation of what the "Statute of Virginia for religious freedom" entailed, and told him not to send me any more of that sort of bullshit... He actually apologized.)
