* I wrote a thing explaining how Republican education policy is designed to poorly educate people who are not rich:

They emphatically don't want people not rich enough for private school to be educated or to vote, so all their policies are designed to make that happen. Education "Reforms" the push rote learning and standardized tests at the expense of critical thinking and enrichment. Back to Basics reforms that deliberately make it that instead of specialist Science and Social Studies history teachers they make the math and English teachers without the right sort of training do it. Defunding schools so that they have large class sizes instead of small and over worked teachers burn out. Forcing experienced teachers out of the business by paying them so poorly they need two or three jobs to cover loans, supplies, cost of living, etc.. Gutting retirement and health plans for the same reason. Union busting for the same reason. Charter schools have lower standards so they can either kick out the non native speakers, kids with special needs, and behavioral/emotional problems, or if they have the same populations, they don't perform as well, since the teachers don't have to be qualified and are lower paid. Some states don't require Charters to do back ground checks or have accounting requirements o the for profits can embezzle freely. Charter funnel public money out of public schools into the pockets of the likes of Betsey DeVos.

Public schools are required to educate everybody, have to teach to a standard, have qualified teachers, have real accounting that can be audited, do background checks on employees, etc.. Charter Schools don't. Republicans Looove charter schools and there is a pattern of them closing effective public schools with high minority populations and replacing them with half ass barely regulated charters.

Oh, and Charters are often religious, so they can have gutted science curriculum and will kick girls out for getting pregnant. They also take over school boards and do things like mandate creationism instead of evolution in science classrooms or racist curriculum that do things like frame slavery as good, slaves as "immigrants", and erasing contributions by people who aren't white men. They also fight hard against ESL curriculum and funding for non-English speaking immigrants.

The last thing Republicans want is a science literate, civically and historically educated electorate that can thing for themselves, evaluate arguments and evidence who vote.

They are trying to do something similar with colleges and Universities. There are these for profit colleges (again see Betsey DeVos's family), which lost their accreditation because they existed to put students in an impossible level of debt without giving them degrees while sucking up student loan money for themselves. Democrats made a set of regulations punishing those colleges by taking away the accreditation and denying them student loan money. they were also in the process of cancelling the debt of the victims. Betsey DeVos is rolling all of that back.
