* I stayed up Monday to mail the last ebay and forage as the rapidly rising temperature after dawn suggested it would be a scorcher, and being in the line an hour and half in morning heat would likely be better than waiting 1-2 hours in full afternoon heat. Also, we'd dropped squirrel's truck off the night before and I'd be having to drive him to get it at some random point during the day. I gambled it'd finish in the morning sometime instead of waiting for a part until afternoon. The line was already past the benches, but I scored the last close parking spot, so I could bring out my lawn chair to sit on at least, and I'd had the foresight to bring an ILL that I need to finish Tuesday night. I made it from Channel to Cole Porter in Cecil Beaton's "Glass of Fashion," which I'm calling a win. I made int home, exhausted and sticky, cleaned a terrible kitchen floor mess that had appeared in the night, which I had only discovered on my way out in the morning, put the forage away, and had made it all the way into bed, when Squirrel came to tell me it was time to go. So I took him to his bank, then dropped him off at the honest Mechanic, came home, cleaned the floor Again, and went to bed. (Squirrel had removed the cause of ongoing floor mess when we went out to get his car, but mess remained). I was awakened by the rising temperature in my room. I'm guessing the power went out some time between five and six. It came back on 7:30ish. Once it was cool enough to sleep again, Tavy and I took a nap, and then I read more of the Interior Design section, in which I am less interested, to be honest. I think he's at his best when he talks about the interesting eccentric women of his youth and things like the relationship between ballet and women's fashion and design. There is something cursory about the post WWII chapters. Anyway, it was past midnight before it was cool enough in the rest of the apartment to cook and eat, so I am super behind. I did my best at the nightly Sisyphan News firehouse battle, but didn't come close to getting it all. I'll try catching up tomorrow.

Sometimes I feel like I'm in a "summarize Proust Contest" only with the task being summarizing how our civilization collapsed and possibly how the world ends, instead of nostalgia for a time and place long lost.

The cats have been sweet and cuddly all day and evening. When I wrote this, the Empress Livia was sprawled part on my desk with the sofa back as a pillow, and the Emperor Octavian was pressed against my leg, both angelically asleep.

Update: I was starting to close things down for the night when Livia attempted to blerp in the second worst place possible. My response scared her into fleeing, so I couldn't medicate her, but during the cleaning up process I discovered she'd gotten the bed first. I have resorted to the emergency back up sheet, with it's weird texture and crappy elastic so it slides off. *facepalm* I am now hot and cranky with metaphorical miles to go before I sleep. she's out of hiding now, but they are playing. I'll have to catch her when they've tired themselves out.

* I wrote the following in answer to someone asking if the Electric Dreams series, which I watched this week, was any good: It’s an anthology show, so some are more likely to work for you than others. (I was not big on the first one despite the excellent acting and design). Each story is done in a different visual style that suits the subject matter . The cast is amazing and there are some stunning visuals in there. I’ve read a lot of these stories growing up, and unfortunately the common themes in Dick’s work such as technology, othering, and state control are still alarmingly relevant and as a result surprisingly little needs updating o be utterly relevant to this current political and social moment. A lot of the questions about the nature of conscienceless and what counts as Personhood are pretty much timeless by their nature.

I really liked the show and was disappointed their weren’t more of them I could watch right now, but as I said anthology, so YMMV.
