My immune system is generally terrible at fighting off disease, being mostly concerned with destroying all that pesky cartilage and assorted other bots of me it has determined are secretly alien. I am still tired, dizzy, occasionally achey, and my lungs are thicker than I like, but it's manageable. Today is meant to be cleaning and pie making. I am working in small bits with long rests in between.

Date: 2018-01-11 07:18 pm (UTC)On the mudslides - in California bad fires are really, really often followed by nasty, nasty mudslides. All the vegetation that normally holds the earth in place is gone or weakened, and then it just picks up speed and mass and barrels through everything. It's still terrifying. Water-floods are bad enough, when it's mud it's so much harder to get out and clean up afterwards.

Date: 2018-01-11 10:21 pm (UTC)I noticed BBC underlining that, that the fires set things up for mudslides on this scale. Whether one dies at Pompeii or Herculaneum, one is still dead, but mudslide are right up there for horrible things that one an see coming and have just time enough to grasp the oncoming horror of. BBC was interviewing the man that dug out the baby buried four feet down and he was so clearly traumatized by it. I weep for him whenever I think of him, imagining it from his perspective. The coincidence that he decided to check on his neighbor just then and not five minutes later. Hearing a baby and trying frantically to figure out WHERE. The desperate digging and the not knowing whether or not he was exactly to late, all this on top of being lucky enough to have survived himself. The thrusting a microphone in his face and him still not sure if was on time or too late after all yet. If some strange baby had been carried so far how many other poeople were under there. I didn't blame him at all for breaking down.

Date: 2018-01-11 10:43 pm (UTC)I've been sleeping a lot, recovering from illness, but checking in honestly didn't occur to me because it's more than an hour drive to where the mudslides are. I forget that people go 'California' and don't know where various places are relative to each other.
