* It's looking like one of the Arabic speaking women reporters supported by some of the other translators talked the Loyalists down and got them to free their 30-40 prisoners from the hotel. Some people are now wondering if that is where Gaddafi was hiding, and resolve crumbled after he moved out. There is no proof, only speculation.

* There's been fierce fighting at an airport, and some speculation the loyalists are trying to get Gaddafi out.

* Saadi, one of Gaddafi's sons, is contacting people in the hopes of negotiating cease fire.

* What's up with random spellings of Gaddafi? There are literally over a hundred roman alphabet spellings. I've picked one my spell checker liked pretty much at random. Whatever news source you are watching, odds are it won't match.

* In case you were curious, Iman El Abidi, the brave woman who accused Libyan government forces of rape, is now safe in the US and well out of danger. I know I'd been wondering.

* I don't know if I mentioned that there is a major Hurricane coming. They expect it it hit as far north as the Carolinas and it's even odds it will head towards New york vs. out to sea. I hope all you East coasters stay safe.

* Steve jobs has stepped down as CEO of Apple due to ill health.

* NYPD has been illegally infiltrating law abiding organizations simply because they have Arab American members. Assholes. The CIA was also involved.

I keep thinking this is the 21st century and we should be better than this by now.

* I haven't been able to procure more of the glorious huckleberry tea at the farmer's market. I tried the website in desperation. no huckleberry. Heart in my mouth, lest it had been discontinued, I emailed asking if it was gone. It turns out to be a typo. She gave me directions for ordering in spite of the issue. I'm going to wait until next week when there is more money and try again. I can haz tea!

* Deusabscondum's visiting tomorrow, so I will likely still be behind on the Internet until Friday or Saturday. Y'all know the drill folks.

I was talking to a customer in Vermont, and they're expecting the hurricane to hit that far north.

Remember, climate change is a Lieberal myth.

Also, we have always been at war with Oceania.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks of Orwell every time they call something the opposite of what it is.

Updated weather map includes storm warnings up into Quebec, so I'm not surprised. this is supposed to be a big one. I warned my mom yesterday to stock up. I'm hoping they don't lose power as that could literally kill her if it lasts.

They are already evacuating parts of the Carolinas, and are debating what to do with New Jersey and NYC, which is really too big to evacuate.

Re: The spelling of Qaddafi's name, it's because Arabic is very poorly suited to romanization and media never seems to know what to do with Arabic words that contain qāf, which is the initial sound of his surname (rendered G/K/Q).

I'd personally pick "q" (because Arabic has a sound that is like the English "k" and is different) but English speakers don't usually know what make of it. FYI, here's the sound that qāf makes. It's not uncommon in names, in my experience.

His name also has vowels of two different lengths; the first "a" sound is short (written as a diacritic) and the second is written as "alif", which is long. Actually, the final vowel is long too. So, if I had to romanize his name, I'd write it as Qaddāfī

Re: The double "d", there's a diacritic (shaddah) in the middle over the letter produces the sound that indicates that the "d" should be doubled. It's...not actually a /d/ sound though, that's a dhāl, which produces /ð/, the initial sound in "this".

Most texts I seen that romanize Arabic put a dot or something under roman character "d" to represent dhāl, giving us things like "ḏ". So I'll amend my romanization to this: Qaḏḏāfī

In conclusion, the (hopefully) former ruler ruler of Libya's name contains of lot of linguistic information that English and many other languages aren't equipped for encoding conveniently, nor do most people care. I wish there was a standard too though, given I like consistency and accuracy.

Re: qāf = g sometimes, Wikipedia has some explanation here.

Hope that helps a little!

Thank you so much for posting this. Linguistics fascinate me, but I discovered that way to late in my college career to pursue.
