* Apparently, everyone in town thought today was a good day to swim, so there was rather more gimping about than I like, but we had a cool, relaxing swim in the lake and then a potluck snack picnic. Delicious and fun. We are likely going twice next week, as it's a run off lake and those are really only good July-august.

* Last week I watched Brothers of the Head. There was something utterly haunting about the Treadaway twins' performances. There was a familiarity and an intensity to it, that grabbed hold of me and wouldn't let go. I did figure out eventually that one of them went on to play Penny Dreadful's Victor Frankenstein, but that clearly wasn't it. It wasn't just the looks, but the physicality that got me, something in the facial expressions and body language, something more visceral, something very different than the Frankenstein character body language. (The whatever it was was stronger in his twin, and a skim of his IMDB page suggests I am not aware of having seen any of Luke Treadaway's other work to notice). In any case, it seems a particular response to those particular performances and that particular movie.

Whatever it was, I kept picking at it. I'm like that. It has been one of my more useful survival traits over the years. I respond strongly and viscerally in that way to something, likely it connects to something running deep in my psyche. I trace such things to the roots in case it's a thing I need to process or take other action on.

And then I got it. I figured out who they resembled, and I shuddered. I've been unsettled by it ever since. It wasn't just physical resemblance, you see. Oh there are physical similarities about the eyes, brow, and chin, but barely there in the adult version of the actor. It was the mix of testosterone fueled aggressiveness mixed with vulnerability, the strange mix of the incestuous and self destructive drive to separate. It was the raw physicality of the performances. They moved right and the emotions were... a rocket sled back to high school. No wonder it haunted me. I can practically smell them.

I have a lot of complicated thoughts and feelings about the movie that I can't properly articulate. I can't even tell you if it's good or not, if I liked it or not. I had the usual fun spotting references to various punk bands and artists and the critique of the music industry seemed pretty spot on. It was problematic as hell and it was meant to be, i think. One of the central things about the movie was the question of what is and isn't exploitation, who is and isn't a victim. It was all worth mulling, but it's all overshadowed for me by the power of those two central performances and the way that echoed for me.

There were a lot of things I could say about then and have in various forms over the years about the geography of class, sex work, sexual coercion, addiction, internalized homophobia, honor, and the ridiculous high drama of my high school sex life. I thought about making another attempt, but I think I've poked those scars enough for tonight.

I just wish I'd seen it with someone else so we could mull it all together. It was that sort of film.
