This is really important right now.
* Urgent Action Item: Contact your Congress Critters about sticking together.
My experience is they mostly just log for or against whatever it is, but if it's a rare case where they want arguments, tailor them to your target critter.
Contact your Senators and make sure they stand firm against dangerous nominees like Gabbard, Hegseth, Patel, and RFK Jr.
(That goes double if, like John Fetterman, your Critter is talking about bipartisanship over what's best for constituents and the country.)
If you have a democratic senator try to convince them to hang tight as a party in opposition instead of giving ground that will hurt people or the country.
If your senator is republican give it a try anyway. Argue national security, law and order, or please don't bring back polio or the like as is appropriate.
Contact your House of Representative member and beg them to stand firm against bills such as the ones intended to gut social security and Medicare in favour of tax give aways for billionaires and corporations and anything attacking bodily autonomy. (If they are republican go hard right if you have to give an argument.)
We need our Congress Critters to did their heals in and make them fight for every inch.

I am emphatically not enjoying it looking like opaque black smoke is endlessly blowing in front of my eye or a there is a crack in a phone screen only in motion, but there is nothing to be done short of a dangerous eye operation. Once a floater happens, it's generally forever and this bastard is huge and placed in exactly the wrong place it what was my better eye, but isn't any longer. Sigh.

This is extremely good analysis and her perspective is valuable. I grew up with the Murnau and have watched it countless times since I was little. I've seen the Herzog not nearly as often, but I did see it within a year of it's release and watch it periodically as well. I was a kid when the Herzog came out and didn't really appreciate it until some point in my 20's.
I don't agree with quite everything in here and I think the new Nosferatu has a lot of things to say, particularly in the way it is trying to talk about gendered violence. At the same time? I was very disappointed they lost the dance macabre like sequences from the Herzog, because those were important and I think would have been relevant to us for the reasons this commentator enumerated.
For the record, Goth Millennial and I really liked the new one, but the audience we saw it with reacted in a way that suggested a lot of people are deeply uncomfortable with what's on the screen and aren't willing to engage with the complexities and ambiguities. I particularly liked how the movie was both doing it's own thing, but also clearly in dialog with the other two versions, much like I experience the Herzog in relation to the Murnau.
All versions of Nosferatu have problems. Addressing one set can open up a new set. That is true here. It was true with the Herzog.
Honestly? When the commentator was discussing the ways people had trouble engaging with the Herzog when it was new, reminded me a bit of sitting in an audience where half the people were experiencing the film in a way completely different from the way i process it.
I am wondering if discomfort and debate are not things essential to doing Nosferatu right. I think it's part of why something so influential on future filmmakers rarely gets remade along with the whole antisemitism problem. (You can't remake Nosferatu without trying to decide how to handle the anti-Semitism of the original. It's a tricky, tricky thing. Same with Dracula. hundred plus year old media can be landmines.)
Anyway, this Nosferatu comparison piece is excellent and I really appreciated the perspective and context.

* Urgent Action Item: Contact your Congress Critters about sticking together.
My experience is they mostly just log for or against whatever it is, but if it's a rare case where they want arguments, tailor them to your target critter.
Contact your Senators and make sure they stand firm against dangerous nominees like Gabbard, Hegseth, Patel, and RFK Jr.
(That goes double if, like John Fetterman, your Critter is talking about bipartisanship over what's best for constituents and the country.)
If you have a democratic senator try to convince them to hang tight as a party in opposition instead of giving ground that will hurt people or the country.
If your senator is republican give it a try anyway. Argue national security, law and order, or please don't bring back polio or the like as is appropriate.
Contact your House of Representative member and beg them to stand firm against bills such as the ones intended to gut social security and Medicare in favour of tax give aways for billionaires and corporations and anything attacking bodily autonomy. (If they are republican go hard right if you have to give an argument.)
We need our Congress Critters to did their heals in and make them fight for every inch.

This is extremely good analysis and her perspective is valuable. I grew up with the Murnau and have watched it countless times since I was little. I've seen the Herzog not nearly as often, but I did see it within a year of it's release and watch it periodically as well. I was a kid when the Herzog came out and didn't really appreciate it until some point in my 20's.
I don't agree with quite everything in here and I think the new Nosferatu has a lot of things to say, particularly in the way it is trying to talk about gendered violence. At the same time? I was very disappointed they lost the dance macabre like sequences from the Herzog, because those were important and I think would have been relevant to us for the reasons this commentator enumerated.
For the record, Goth Millennial and I really liked the new one, but the audience we saw it with reacted in a way that suggested a lot of people are deeply uncomfortable with what's on the screen and aren't willing to engage with the complexities and ambiguities. I particularly liked how the movie was both doing it's own thing, but also clearly in dialog with the other two versions, much like I experience the Herzog in relation to the Murnau.
All versions of Nosferatu have problems. Addressing one set can open up a new set. That is true here. It was true with the Herzog.
Honestly? When the commentator was discussing the ways people had trouble engaging with the Herzog when it was new, reminded me a bit of sitting in an audience where half the people were experiencing the film in a way completely different from the way i process it.
I am wondering if discomfort and debate are not things essential to doing Nosferatu right. I think it's part of why something so influential on future filmmakers rarely gets remade along with the whole antisemitism problem. (You can't remake Nosferatu without trying to decide how to handle the anti-Semitism of the original. It's a tricky, tricky thing. Same with Dracula. hundred plus year old media can be landmines.)
Anyway, this Nosferatu comparison piece is excellent and I really appreciated the perspective and context.
